My position is that, given that antisemitism exists, protests against synagogues would always backfire, regardless of the legitimacy of the grievance. I'm not interested in the ethical debate. It's remarkably counter productive, and it's disappointing people can't see this

This is exactly it. There is also an insidious genre of essay which is “let me write about Sudan once and never again, just so I can say I did it, and then get back to asking why people are obsessed about Palestine“. These people can never discuss Sudan on its own terms.
The people who say "why this obsession with Palestine? why don't you post about Sudan?" never post about Sudan themselves.
What they mean is "it's fine you don't care about Sudan. You should be similarly indifferent to Palestine"

(of course, many people do post about both and other crises)

In another astounding ruling, the Israeli supreme court orders the eviction of Beduin Palestinian Ras Jaraba village to make way for the expansion of the city of Dimona. 500 residents, whose ancestors have lived on the land since Ottoman time, will be expelled to establish a Jewish neighbourhood.

Opposition to Israeli settler colonialism and the genocide in Gaza are not antisemitic. But as we see in attitudes to Nick Fuentes etc they can overlap with antisemitism, or lead one to excuse antisemitism: because Israel is "the Jewish State", because many Jews support or affiliate with Israel.

I followed McBride's "Calculated Risk" in the early 2010s. Not only he predicted the housing and financial crash, he also called the bottom of the recession correctly.
Now he says it's crypto which is going to bring the system down. Makes sense.

A reminder that cancellations due to political pressures happen all the time, and they are not restricted to one issue or side.
If you don't want it to happen to you, speak about it when it happens to people you disagree with.

I should add. Professor Andreas Kaplony, the co-organiser, is a towering figure in the field, a formidable scholar of early Islam. If he cannot be trusted to lead this seminar, then I'm not sure who can be trusted.

It's simple: either we uphold academic freedom for everyone or none of us will have it.
Consistency means no interference regardless who the speaker are. You don't like them - don't come, or come and ask questions, or stand outside with a sign. Don't cancel the event.

The Labour Left had total control over the party in 2020, lost it without much fight, and since then has been having a tantrum about the nasty boy who took their toys.
The Labour right stole the toys and has not stopped gloating since. It seems that's the only thing they know how to do.
and it's a feature, not a bug, of whatever mangled faction this is that is running Labour. these people are able to do one thing and one thing alone - fight factional wars against the left.

they're absolutely shit at literally anything else.

But Israel abruptly decided to send all Gazan patients back to Gaza next week.

Unless third countries take them ASAP, many will die 🧵
