A chance encounter

I wrote up something briefly, to feed the brainworms.

A short piece of writing on Elara's response to the reveal that the Dragonsong war was built on deceit from the church.

Lies. All of it.

Elara’s armour lay where she’d dropped it, a heap of dull steel, the scent of snow and blood still clinging to it. Aymeric’s words rang in her head, steady and solemn as a funeral bell. She’d fought dragons, fought men, fought for Ishgard’s honour. And now? That honour was smoke.

“The Holy See deceived you. We deceived ourselves.”

Elara laughed, a short, bitter sound that broke halfway through. Deceived? That word was too kind. They’d raised her on tales of Thordan’s glory, of the dragon’s unending malice. She’d offered prayers before every battle, asking for Halone’s blessing as she drove her sword into scale and flesh. Every friend who’d fallen, every comrade burned or broken, had done so believing they were righteous.

Now she wished she had died clinging to that belief too.

Her heart hurt. Fury, it hurt. Not the kind of pain steel could draw, but something deeper, a hollow tearing beneath the ribs. She wanted to scream, to strike something, to make the world pay for what it had stolen. But there was no enemy left to fight.

Thordan was dead, and the church in ruins.

Elara stopped at the window, staring out at the city below. Snow fell soft and slow over Ishgard, cloaking its spires in white. Beautiful, as ever. Untouched by the blood in its streets or the lies in its prayers.

“I fought for you. For all of you. And you made fools of us.”

Her breath fogged the window, lingered, then smeared as she pressed her hand to the glass. The cold bit at her skin. Below, the bells tolled, low and mournful, rolling through the streets like a prayer for the dead. Maybe that was all they were now. Not heroes. Not martyrs. Just ghosts in a city built on lies.
