The focus of the image is a portion of LDN 1641, an interstellar nebula in the constellation of Orion. In this view, a deep-black background is sprinkled with a multitude of dots (stars) of different sizes and shades of bright white. Across the sea of stars, a web of fuzzy tendrils and ribbons in varying shades of orange and brown rises from the bottom of the image towards the top-right like thin coils of smoke.

The Sentinel-1 mission – which provides radar vision for the Copernicus Earth observation programme – has a new addition to its family of satellites, with the arrival in orbit of Sentinel-1D, the last of the groundbreaking first generation. The launch took place at 22:02 CET (18:02 local time), on Tuesday, 4 November, on board an Ariane 6 launcher from Europe’s Spaceport in French Guiana.

Listening in to a meeting of radio astronomers: direct-to-cell satellites are SO BRIGHT that even though they're following the rules and broadcasting in their allocated bands, they destroy astronomical observations across a huge swath of frequencies.

The moon is very bright, but there are very faint auroras, too! (The pillars are just barely naked-eye visible, they look amazing in a few second exposure! The red colour on top is completely invisible naked-eye.)

Looking toward some scrubby woods, with green and red auroras low in the nighttime sky, and faint stars sprinkled above. The moon is behind me in the sky and very bright, so that limits how long an exposure I can take, which is why so few stars are visible.

Looking across an open field, lit by the moon, with a couple of silhouetted spruce trees on the right side. There is a pillar of auroras low on the horizon, green at the bottom and red at the top. There are a few stars visible in the sky.

I keep thinking "surely today is the last day I'll get the goats out in the electronet pasture" and then the snow melts and the weather gets (somewhat) nicer again. Not a whole lot of grass left, but the goats (and dogs and llama) definitely do appreciate a change of scenery.

An open grassy pasture under bright blue sky, with somewhat sad looking grass because it's been frosted several times. There are a bunch of black, white, and brown goats eating over on one edge, a fuzzy brown llama eating on the other edge, a big yellowish dog lounging in the sun, and a fluffy white dog trying to figure out how to get herself into trouble.
