Joesph Lockard's "the Myth of Virtual Community" sounds really badly dated at glance but it seems(?) to be an observation that some "virtual communities" are propped up by corpos to define a target demographic and put ppl in it, which sounds REALLY relevant today

bro i don't know if i can survive this rabbit hole of contemporary anthropological studies of 90s internet culture. the pull is so strong. im gonna be stuck here for months
several essays from David Porter's book 1997 "Internet Culture", including titles such as:
Flesh Made Word: Sex, Text, and the Virtual Body
The Postmodern Paradiso: Dante, Cyberpunk, and the Technosophy of Cyberspace
Spam: Heteroglossia and Harassment in Cyberspace
I Flamed Freud: A Case Study in Teletextual Incendiarism
Essayistic Messages: Internet Newsgroups as an Electronic Public Sphere
Progressive Politics, Electronic Individualism, and the Myth of Virtual Community

real af.
if you like someone's music, tell them!
if you like someone's art, tell them!
a snippet from Rene T. A. Lysloff's 2003 "Musical Community on the Internet: An On-line Ethnography" that reads as follows:
After participating in the scene for several months, I came to realize the most important form of currency in the mod scene is an e-mail message from a listener telling you that your music is awesome.

doin some unguided research. i love love the anthropologically phrased description of "being online" from the early 00s (text from Rene T. A. Lysloff's "Musical Community on the Internet:
An On-line Ethnography", 2003)
Even though my Internet fieldwork seemed, in the realm of embodied sensation,
a rather solitary experience, it was still no less intensely social.
Although I conducted my research without ever leaving my home, my work
involved immersing myself in a new musical community, but with informants I
would never actually meet face-to-face, people whose presence I could only
infer from their textual messages. I wondered whether what I was doing really
was fieldwork because I never had to go anywhere physically, never had to
make demands on my body or endure the tangible hazards that field researchers
routinely face. Instead, fieldwork meant spending many late nights in
front of my computer, "traveling" the far corners of cyberspace.

I had a commenter that wasn't sure what I meant by "Donald no Magical World". That's the Game Gear version of McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure! check out this tune!

One of the best to do it, @gst.melosylexia.com profiles (and arranges, as probably the first to do so!) musician Yoko Wada, a criminally underrated and unknown Master System / Game Gear composer: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0C1J...

I searched around a bit more and found two arrangements on Dwelling of Duels (for Master of Darkness and Putt & Putter)
but... none of my favorite tunes. :(
is it conceited to say i like my own arrangements more? 😳

NEW MIX!
Yoko Wada was is one of the most prolific and skilled composers that you can find on the 8-bit Sega systems. Unfortunately, that's also the only place you can find her.
I'd like to shine a light on some of the amazing work she did that's gone unnoticed and unloved.
premieres in ~15 min!

(also late reply lol) yeah i was not being serious. i love obviously-incorrect names and Tom Scripts seemed like a fun "yes, and" moment
gst.melosylexia.com
this is Mr Scripts erasure. Tom's name is literally right there on the title screen

thinking about it... yeah that makes sense. i try to make videos that i'd want to watch but this one might have too specific of an audience, lol

i do feel a bit odd that my tritone video has flatlined, esp in the shadow of its prequel (witchcraft).
i rewrote that video 6 times, and find myself wondering: would one of the 5 earlier drafts have fared better with the algorithm or whatever?
maybe not...but. im happy with how the video came out.
