obv random encounters have an important role in say old-school attritional dungeon crawl design but i think they are used an awful lot outside of contexts that make them meaningful

on reflection i think it's untrue that i dislike jrpg systems, i just don't like *random encounters*. among the jrpgs i get a lot out of mechanically the throughline really is just "any guy you fight is a Specific Guy the designer built and placed"
