The housing market is going into reverse, dominated by downsizers. What does the end of the property ladder say about our changing attitude to our homes - and towards acquisition culture in general?

My latest essay for @thenewworldmag.bsky.social is out now

The rise of the early downsizers
It was once a financial move for old age, but now, faced with stagnant wages and stubborn mortgage rates, younger homeowners are selling up and shrinking

Park them, of course. They’re tarnished. A friend who was also there at those gigs posted on social asking us to consider how we may have played some small part in facilitating a wider culture in which Watkins was able to abuse. My instinct was to challenge that suggestion. But but but...

The death of Ian Watkins after a prison attack is truly bleak end to an appalling tragedy; the worst abuses hidden by fan culture. I struggle with this whole saga. Some of my most cherished young nights were watching LP play to 100 ppl at the witchwood in Ashton. What to do with those memories now?

I'm not particularly a Polanski fan, but just getting right to the point is really very straightforward, instead of all the queasy obsequiousness, and it's a blessed relief to see it

So refreshing to see someone challenge the smug, nasty Reform narrative

I could watch Zack Polanski utterly wreck Zia Yusuf ALL DAY LONG.

Thank you! Absolute correct about the proportion thing - it's NOT just short legs!

"The wealth tax debate shouldn’t be separate from the one about how we tax property and pensions – that’s where most of the country’s wealth sits."  c/o @resfoundation.bsky.social Bet it will continue to be, though. 🙄

Almost certainly actually not after this, tbh

Yes, the ‘short therefore skinny’ nonsense started with Topshop petite. I used to have to take a 12 there even when I was still an 8 everywhere else (ie: a long time ago)

Schools are banning smartphones (rightly) so 13+ will be literally banned by the institution they have to go to every day from carrying the device that holds the ID another state institution demands they carry.

This is increasingly absurd and as a result it won’t actually happen.

I think it was @hannahfearn.bsky.social who was asking what's up with the govt's ability to read the room ...
In what world is the response to high-profile and vocal groups of parents raising concerns about teens and smartphones to propose digital ID for teenagers?

Government to consult on digital IDs for 13-year-olds
There has been a backlash to the announcement a UK-wide digital ID scheme will be introduced by 2029.

!!!!

What's the name of the shape/style?
hannahfearn.bsky.social
Sadly COS are designed exclusively for the tall - i've tried to get their trousers altered before but the proportions are all off.

Great letter, and off the back of it I went off to read Sathnam's superb column too. Recommend.
hannahfearn.bsky.social
I used to mock my mother for this behaviour as a teenager. Now I'm the one that's middle aged it feels like elite acceptance of your own style.
hannahfearn.bsky.social
I had the same problem elsewhere. Total nightmare. Even when you find a great pair you can't just buy them in three shades and be done with it.

A friend mentioned Next the other day. I do have a jumpsuit from there I bought on Vinted which fits very well, so this is a good tip

Thanks, haven’t tried there for a while.

I also have no bum, so that could be a winner
