Attended the first eLTER Science Conference in Tampere last week. Grateful for the chance to present my PhD work and visit SMEAR II in Hyytiälä. Thanks to the organizers for a well-run and important event!

My posters are up at the #eLTER2025SC! 🌿
You’ll find them at stands 10 and 11.
I’ll be there from 17:15 to 18:30 – stop by for a chat! #eLTERcommunity

A hare 🐇 hiding, and seagull chicks 🐤 waddling around in a specially set-up breeding area for gulls — right in the middle of the city.

Just arrived in Tampere for the first-ever @elter-ri.eu Science Conference 🌍
A full week ahead focused on long-term, system-level ecosystem research:
🔬 Critical zone & socio-ecological integration
📊 Interdisciplinary sessions & workshops
🌱 Field visits to LTER sites

It appears that Elon Musk's Starlink satellites are falling out of orbit at a rate of 120 per month, each releasing 30 kilograms of aluminum oxide that depletes the ozone layer. The concentration of these oxides in the atmosphere has increased eightfold since 2016.

Europe should further capitalize on DOGE's dismissal of US scientists by attracting talented researchers. This brain gain could strengthen our innovation ecosystem and turn these challenging times into an opportunity.

It is slowly becoming clear that the US under Trump is no longer a reliable partner for Europe's security, & that the free world needs a new leader. Europe should take up this challenge & step up its support for Ukraine so they can continue to fight back against the Russian aggressor. Слава Україні!

Apparently, Russia seized half of America faster than it did one-fifth of Ukraine. Selenskyj was made a fool of in the Oval Office as part of a staged spectacle intended to give Trump an excuse to abandon Ukraine and blame Selenskyj, which is why TASS was there live, while Reuters or AP were not.

🌐 The system excels particularly in European language processing, offering comprehensive language support while focusing on data protection and computational efficiency.

💫 Le Chat's open-source core technology and privacy-first design enhance its technical capabilities. The platform integrates premium Canva features and runs smoothly on both iOS and Android devices.

🔧 The platform demonstrates significant efficiency by maintaining similar performance levels with a smaller model size. It features built-in data sovereignty for EU companies, GDPR-compliant architecture, and supports on-premise deployment

Mistral AI's Le Chat runs 13x faster than ChatGPT, processes 1,000 words per second compared to ChatGPT's 650, and shows better image generation capabilities than DALL-E. The system operates with API costs at $8 per million tokens, while GPT-4 charges $30.

📊 This development coincides with the broader trend: From Feb 2024 to Jan 2025, global temperatures averaged 1.61°C above pre-industrial levels. In 18 of these 19 months, we exceeded the 1.5°C mark.(4/4)

🌍 The expected cooling from La Niña hasn't materialized. EU Copernicus now sees signs that La Niña conditions might completely dissipate by March, contrary to earlier predictions (3/4)

🌊 Ocean surface temperatures between 60°S and 60°N latitude averaged 20.78°C - the second highest January value ever recorded, just behind January 2024. A strong indicator of continued ocean warming. (2/4)

According to the EU's Copernicus Programme, January 2025 was globally the warmest January on record with a 13.23°C average temperature, measuring 1.75°C above pre-industrial levels. Most remarkable: this record warmth occurred during La Niña conditions, which typically provide a cooling effect (1/4)
It’s time for THE charger.

Today, the USB-C becomes officially the common standard for charging new mobile electronic devices in the EU.

It means better-charging technology, reduced e-waste, and less fuss to find the chargers you need!

Thanks to the heroic efforts of the pilots, the aircraft managed to reach the coast despite hydraulic failure and severely limited controls. While they couldn't prevent the crash, their actions still saved numerous lives.
#RussiaIsATerroristState

To summarize this whole inhumanity: Russia once again shot down a civilian aircraft and afterwards denied it emergency landing on Russian soil. Additionally, it jammed the GPS in the area and diverted the plane to Kazakhstan - hoping it would crash into the Caspian Sea to erase all evidence

Despite high phenological plasticity, snowbed specialists may face competitive pressure from better adapted species. Internal-clock-driven senescence timing could limit their ability to benefit from longer growing seasons.
