Trans rights are not the rights of a tiny minority, trans rights are everyone’s rights to self-determination, control of our bodies, and a society where opportunity and aesthetics are not restricted by sex assigned at birth

You should support and defend trans people because trans people are people

Proud to have worked on this story. Journalism spends so much time focusing on other industries — it’s worth turning that focus onto ourselves and asking the same questions.

So anyway, these guys are all still employed in journalism. I'm not. Journalism didn't break my heart. White supremacy, prejudice, callousness, fascism broke my fucking heart.

Our large grant that has allowed @thesicktimes.bsky.social to expand runs out in the fall. We’re trying to get ahead and raise $30k this month in our summer fundraiser.

If you have the means: can you help us reach our goal?

#LongCOVID research and support programs are under attack from the Trump administration. We're delivering vital news and holding institutions accountable during these difficult times.

We need your help to keep our essential work going into 2026. the-sick-times.fundjournalism.org/donate/
White text on a purple background reads, "The Trump administration is trying to erase all reminders of COVID-19 and Long COVID. The Sick Times won’t let that happen. Donate now." White text on a purple background reads, "The Sick Times has followed: Attacks on COVID-19 and Long COVID data. The removal of government resources about Long COVID as a disability. The abrupt cancellations of HHS’ Long COVID advisory committee and Office of Long COVID Research and Practice. Federal workers with Long COVID facing new threats to their jobs." The bottom half of the slide shows a mock-up of an iPad with The Sick Times home page on it showcasing some stories we've published. White text on a purple background reads, "The Sick Times has followed: RECOVER grants for pathobiology research cancelled — and then quickly restored thanks to community advocacy. State-level Long COVID programs harmed by federal funding cuts. Minnesota’s unique Long COVID program threatened, then preserved, again thanks to advocacy. New threats to vaccine access, already making it harder for people to get vaccinated. The right side of the slide shows a mock-up of a phone with The Sick Times home page on it showcasing some stories we've published. White text on a purple background reads, "As tokens of our appreciation, we’re offering new merch for people who start monthly gifts during this fundraiser: Pins for any new monthly donation. The pins will feature our Caladrius mascot and mission (No pandemic denial, minimizing, or gaslighting here!). Hats for new monthly donations over $20/month, or new one-time donations over $50. These will be classic dad hats featuring our purple logo." Mocks ups of the hat and pin sit atop starbursts.

"I can't believe The New York Times did this" Trans kids? Claudine Gay? Gaza? At some point we have to stop being surprised. The right sees the Times as a vehicle for laundering its conspiracy theories and injecting it into elite America and the Times is very happy to oblige them.

imagining a world where one of the only outlets able to hire journalists without relying on contractors, sub-$45k wages or both focused on the material conditions of the fascist state its readers live in as it ruins its safety net, instead of reporting someone's rejection from an Ivy as "news"
leximcmenamin.com
NYTimes opinion pages told people not to vote for Zohran because he's young and that Cuomo being a sex pest was less of a strike against him. now NYT reports a "leak" of him not getting into Columbia from a eugenicist co-reported by a guy who harasses trans women. boggles the mind, but also, typical

even if there are people there doing good work, the u.s. paper of record’s framing and its editorial priorities are only reinforcing what they’ve done historically — bolstering those who hold power and questioning marginalized groups’ right to exist in public under the guise of “objectivity”
