“This Might Surprise You: A Breast Cancer Story” is out now.

It’s a graphic memoir: comics can do things that no other medium can. I’ve tried to be as honest as possible while also making you laugh. I’ll break your heart while giving you a hug.

Finally collected @hayleygullen.com's new book after ordering it a few weeks ago, and also saw @robinince.bsky.social's new one in the wild. All very pleasing.
My white-person hand holding up a book called THIS MIGHT SURPRISE YOU: A BREAST CANCER STORY. Hayley is an excellent graphic artist, so this featurer her own art. My hand also holding up ICE CREAM FOR A BROKEN TOOTH, a book of poetry.

Yes, her brilliant thoughts prompted by my book 😎

I haven’t had the pleasure… 🙃

So many things that ought to be simple in the NHS are really not. And it’s the sickest, most vulnerable patients who end up dealing with this the most as they have the most contact with the system. It’s really not fair.

But I also wish that the NHS hadn’t sent me an email invitation to get my Covid jab which said “you are eligible” and when I turned up the pharmacist then told me I wasn’t.

(After multiple phone calls the GP thinks I am eligible… at this point though who knows what’s true)

The comms are not good!

I found this really interesting in terms of addressing the trade-offs which we often don’t think about as individuals. I often feel that campaigns for things that seem good on the surface (e.g. rolling out of cancer screenings to more ppl) often don’t acknowledge these trade offs.

Patients often talk about medical care that has been excellent but communications and admin systems that have been poor. @hayleygullen.com tells her story of battling bureaucracy in the latest edition of our quarterly magazine. Get your copy here: pexlib.net?249293

I have lost count of the rejections I’ve had while trying to get published. Feel the sting, try to learn from it, move on.

I just got published by Bloomsbury after 20 years of trying.

Not going to say this will happen for everyone but it’s always worth a shot. Keep your head. Don’t get bitter.

This is a must-read for anyone interested in digital government – Liz talks about service design, fragmented institutions, and user experience!

Referrals that vanish without trace. Phones that don’t get answered. Baffling jargon. @hayleygullen.com tells her story of battling NHS bureaucracy in the latest edition of #PatientExperience quarterly. Get your copy here: pexlib.net?249293

I was chuffed that Liz (who is working on the national breast screening programme) had some big thoughts after reading my book…

Delighted to have written an article about the admin burden of navigating the NHS as a seriously ill person.

Bad admin is traumatising. If your system traumatises people, it can’t heal them.
