I've run a peer support group around living with suicidal experiences for 18 months, we've had over 650 attendances in over 108+ hours of suicide themed conversation.

Not one meeting has gone by where benefits don't crop up as the reason people feel like they may end their life.

In black text it says - behind the effort is the redeployment of £1,000 existing Job centre staff who will provide voluntary help to people on Universal Credit with no requirement to look for work or engage with job help because of their condition - the first national offer of help for this group.
The work coaches known as pathways to work advisors are based in every job centre in England Scotland and wales - fullfling the commitment in March to ramp up efforts to get more people into work. With a target to help 65,000 people with Limited Capability for Work and Work related activity by the end of this financial year

Thank you to all my constituents who have taken the time to contact me regarding the Universal Credit (UC) and Personal Independence Payment (PIP) Bill.

Over the past few weeks, I have given this Bill a great deal of thought and have taken time to listen carefully to the views of local disability organisations and those directly affected. Ahead of today’s vote, I wanted to share my statement on the Bill in full. I hope this offers some reassurance about my position, but if you have any further concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact my office.

There is a significant amount of consensus across the political spectrum that our welfare system is in desperate need of reform after years of neglect under the Conservatives. My politics is all about people, particularly the most vulnerable in society. But we can’t ignore the statistics and the numbers tell us something has gone badly wrong with the benefits system. Since the pandemic around 1000 people are signing up to PIP every day, spending on working age disability and incapacity benefits is up by £20 billion, and is set to increase to £70 billion by the end of this Parliament. There are almost 1million young people not in education, employment or training and 1 in 10 people of working age are claiming a sickness or disability benefit.
Things need to change - but - any changes must be made with care, compassion and proper consideration

Having raised my concerns with Ministers and colleagues since the Bill was proposed, I am extremely pleased that the Government has listened to the concerns of many Labour MPs, including myself, about the proposed welfare changes.

The Secretary of State for Work and Pensions has now confirmed any changes to PIP will not affect existing claimants - and all existing recipients of the health element of Universal Credit – and any new claimant meeting the serious conditions criteria – have their incomes fully protected in real terms.

These changes will offer much-needed reassurance to disabled people and others living with long-term health conditions who were understandably very anxious about the original proposals.

Instead, a full ministerial review of the PIP assessment will be carried out in close consultation with disabled people and the organisations that represent them, ensuring the system is fair, transparent, compassionate and fit for the future. Too often the system does not reach those in most need of support and is too difficult to navigate. I welcome the introduction of more face-to-face assessments, the scrapping of unnecessary reassessments, and the new ‘right to try’. These are important changes that reflect a more humane and understanding approach.

look forward to working with colleagues, disability organisations and the Department for Work and Pensions to make sure future reforms are shaped by those with lived experience, and that our social security system remains a genuine safety net for all who need it.
