In the space of 24 hours, Naomi Wolf has claimed that the fires in LA are an actual war or foreign invasion, a plot to kill people to destroy evidence of Covid vaccine adverse effects, weather manipulation, a deliberate bombing campaign, and mass spraying of mood stabilisers.

No source for this quote among Orwell's writings has been located, and the earliest published source of this phrase found dates to 1982.

Russia's online disinformation campaign took my advice and started deepfaking audio of the people it's quoting. This is deepfake me with the wrong British accent talking about the Kursk offensive.

While the press has focused on the ending of Meta's fact-checking program, not enough has focused on the removal of restrictions on certain types of speech previously deemed harmful on FB & IG, incl. criticism of vulnerable groups—immigrants, women and LGBTQ+ people. about.fb.com/news/2025/01...

X's Community Notes is slow, opaque, and relies on consensus rather than a focus on truth.
In other words, it has features that Zuckerberg and Musk regularly criticise in the so-called "legacy media"

Over the past 4–5 years, Facebook has sunset tools (chiefly CrowdTangle) used by researchers and journalists, made data difficult and expensive to get, and iced out academics studying disinformation.

Now, it's shutting down the fact checking on its platform.

This article has been updated with yet another Rumble "editor pick" video pushing the reptilian conspiracy theory, this one claiming that a "reptilian race controls Earth" and are trying to create a "one-world government."
January 6, 2025: Rumble selected as one of its “editor picks” a video claiming that a “reptilian race controls Earth” and are trying to create a “one-world government” — a conspiracy theory reportedly tied to violence and antisemitism. The video from the show The Why Files, titled “The Seventh Experiment: Lacerta Reveals the Truth of our Creation,” claims that a lizard figure named Lacerta (which is also the name of a type of lizard) admitted that reptilians roam the world and use telepathy to “command” people to see them “as normal humans,” despite their “reptilian look.” The Why Files’ episode thumbnail includes an apparent image of Lacerta.

The show’s host claims that “another reptilian race controls Earth” and are “disguised as leaders in finance, media, and politics” in order to “manipulate global events, steering us toward a one-world government.” He also mentions David Icke, who originally popularized the reptilian conspiracy theory, saying that Lacerta “confirms a lot of” Icke’s claims. Business Insider in 2021 covered the likely antisemitic background of the concept, noting that Icke’s written commentary about the conspiracy theory is “clearly evocative of the centuries-old blood-libel conspiracy theory, which alleged that a cabal of Jews were controlling the world and drinking the blood of Christian children.” [The Why Files, 1/4/25; Rumble, 1/4/25; The Guardian, 4/17/16, 2/20/19; BBC, 4/7/20; Business Insider, 1/7/21]

In today’s #vatniksoup, I’ll introduce an Estonian politician and propagandist, Aivo Peterson. He’s best-known for travelling to Donbas and Mariupol to produce pro-Kremlin propaganda, and for trying to create a pro-Russia separatist movement in Estonia.

An AI image linked to a meme coin spread across platforms last week in posts misidentifying the woman set on fire on New York's subway as "Amelia Carter."

Today, police named the true victim: Debrina Kawam.

But the disinformation had already spun out of control.

Except it's an old photo. @willsommer.bsky.social and others posted it back in 2018:
