Some of you really go all out for Halloween. (The shadow in the window, tho 😬)
A Halloween display outside a Calgary house. Several spooky goblins and scary pumpkins adorn the front yard.

I just finished listening to @karaswisher.bsky.social’s Burn book and it echoed many of the same points—especially making the case for many of the ultra-rich tech bros being children on an emotional level. We sure need someone to look at regs for the sector if we’re going to get through this alive.

I really enjoyed this Coyne column. Said tech oligarchs need to way more attentive to the way public opinion is shifting against them. Coyne is just about the furthest thing from a "soak the rich" socialist, and yet....

Opinion: The tech oligarchy poses a unique threat to democracy
Today’s uber-rich have converted their obscene wealth into outsize power, wielded in the name of bizarre millenarian ideologies

I guess I should finally watch Annie Hall.

You can, of course. But you might not be getting the best candidate. ✌🏼
hollyhoye.bsky.social
And it’s totally OK to feel skeptical—municipal parties are a new idea for Alberta. But we can beat them at their game. Why should just the right-wing parties get the advantages?
hollyhoye.bsky.social
I’m going to gently suggest that you are playing right into Danielle’s hands if you outright disregard progressive parties. She introduced the legislation KNOWING that progressive voters wouldn’t like the idea, and she wanted to stack the deck against them.

Daily walk. Last days for vibrant colours. :/
An aspen forest with grasses as understory, all changing colour from greens to yellows and a few reds.

@calgarysfuture.bsky.social has endorsed some school board candidates and from the research I’ve done they can be relied on. Check them out.

Jyoti Gondek & Brian Thiessen are the candidates of choice. Yes. I'm said it. Costs me nothing. I know both plus I can call both of these candidates friends.
Davison = slogans
Sharp = a vote for the UCP
Farkas = has grown & matured but may have more work to do.

My views, to which I'm entitled.

If you’re still mulling over your choices for councillors and school board trustees, the endorsements by Calgary Future are a great reference.

Also, Alex is very nice and cool and is brimming with ideas for a better city.
calgarysfuture.bsky.social
Alex Williams is in it for the long haul.

But that’s not the only reason we’re endorsing Alex Williams for Ward 11.

Check out our full endorsement page to learn more: https://calgarysfuture.ca/endorsements/alex-williams/

One good thing about the Alberta Teacher's Strike is that kids aren't immersed in disease this fall. Considering we can't get our Covid shot unless we pay $600 for our family of 4, at least risk is mitigated for now. #abpoli

Please circulate this as far, wide & as fast as you can. The party thing is wrong, but it’s the cards that have been dealt. Additionally, some who are “unaffiliated” & making hay over it have affiliations they don’t want you to know about. Separatists, anti-vaxxers, anti-science. Do you homework.

Straight (progressive) talk about municipal parties:

Voted for him yesterday. We’ll see what happens.

I had no idea this even existed. Also, nice vest. 😉
hollyhoye.bsky.social
Probably Davison too. And the Jury is still out on Farkas, IMO.
hollyhoye.bsky.social
Sharp, McLean, Wong and others, if elected, will be responsible for more expensive deals and sprawl. Is everybody ready for MUCH higher property taxes?

Reminder:

“To build the arena, the city is putting up $853M in cash; the Flames are putting up $40M.”

I am not anti-arena, but I am 💯 anti-bad deal.

“I’ve got mine and you can have yours but far away from me.” So much privilege in our single family home neighbourhoods.

Scared for strike talk at the dinner table? Don't worry, we have you covered with the facts on education. ⬇️
Line chart showing Alberta’s real dollars per student dropping under the UCP. Text highlights: Alberta is last in per-student funding, class sizes of 40+, and that the UCP could have acted months ago. Students walking toward a school. Text says Alberta’s NDP built and modernized 244 schools in four years, while the UCP has only built or modernized 78 in five years. Student standing in a library aisle. Text says Alberta’s NDP funded education per student above the national average and that past NDP funding remains higher than the UCP’s, even with inflation. Classroom scene with raised hands. Text says Alberta's NDP introduced a 2023 bill to bring back class size reporting, and the UCP defeated it.

Thanks for reminding me of that.

So we have the Communities First group to thank for a terrible arena deal. I figured. I’m still holding those who weren’t comfortable with the deal for going along with it though (ahem Gondek, Penner, who are running again).

. . “And when push came to shove, we sort of put aside those things and made what we thought was the best decision for the city at the time, at great political cost—especially for the more progressive people.”
