I am totally blaming the stresses of the Homestead/Squirrel Hill exit and construction for it taking this long to get updated sourcing out. Someone needs to solve that. It is madness before the tunnel; chaos.

I had a crazy weekend with one of my dearest friends welcoming a new baby, after a long 24+ hours of labor and also battled the Squirrel Hill tunnels on a Saturday morning with construction taking my son and his wife to PPG Airport so they could set off on their honeymoon.

Apologies to everyone. Normally I am on sourcing and updating right after our Wednesday stream but I got distracted, lost a day, and the next thing I knew it was Monday.

Great thread on the distinctive political culture of Portland, by a US historian who is very much from Portland.

What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

In Broadview, IL this morning outside the Chicago area ICE detention center—

Just rolled up, immediately saw ISP/CCSO arresting a protester w/ a guitar (he appears to be in good spirits over it).

ICE vehicles have been coming and going, including a large bus driven by a masked agent seen earlier.

I can’t believe he actually mentioned the milkshakes that he claimed had concrete in them. That’s the supposed bloodlust that he’s referring to.

@MrAndyNgo
Now that the local and national press have started to cover the Portland ICE area round-the-clock in reaction to the President, Antifa have devised a plan where they are encouraging one another to come in animal costumes.

The costumes serve the function of masking the violent extremism to make the direct action appear like a family-friendly gathering on camera, and to whitewash the past ultraviolence.

In 2019, Antifa devised a similar plot by giving out free "milkshakes" at a protest. But they couldn't contain their bloodthirst and nearly killed me when they saw me. In 2020, they mobilized a fake "Wall of Moms" where female Antifa supporters and members wore yellow shirts to act as human body shields while violent rioters behind them hurled projectile weapons.

I am paraphrasing very loosely here but he said he can't get through their show without smoking beforehand and he smokes the entire time.

Rev. David Swanson, pastor at New Community Covenant Church on Chicago’s South Side, said this about his encounter w/Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino — a visible part of DHS activities.

It's not in the piece, but Swanson added: "It did feel like this is being staged for some kind of audience."
However, faith leaders in Chicago say tensions surrounding the Broadview facility have escalated over the past few weeks.
The Rev. David Swanson, pastor at New Community Covenant Church on Chicago's South Side, declined to comment directly on the lawsuit, explaining that he's only been a part of demonstrations at Broadview on one occasion.
But he said that during his visit, when large numbers of demonstrators assembled near the facility last Friday, the behavior of DHS agents left him unnerved.
At one point, he said, senior Border Patrol official Gregory Bovino — who has become a visible presence in DHS immigration enforcement - walked over to where Swanson and others were standing and began shoving the pastor while yelling in his face. Swanson, who was wearing a clerical collar, said Bovino yelled "I'm not going to tell you again" even as the pastor continued to move back. Part of the incident was documented by a Associated Press photographer; however, DHS officials did not respond immediately to comment on the interaction. Swanson said the experience differed dramatically from demonstrations elsewhere he has attended. In the past, he said, he has tried to be "a presence for peace in situations that can get volatile" and a "person who different sides can be able to approach and talk with and have conversations with." But his experience at Broadview felt different.
"This was the first time that I felt like there was absolutely no regard and no respect for a person who was visibly associated with a faith tradition," Swanson said. "It did not seem like it made one iota of difference."
