So many Confederate memorials were erected in the 1920s, arguably the nadir of American race relations, to entrench Lost Causerism. Stone Mountain in Georgia was only completed in 1972! There's colour television footage of Spiro Agnew speaking at the dedication of it!

It's also interesting how many of these memorials were erected decades and sometimes centuries after the individual died because it wasn't about commemorating "them", it was about commemorating what the powers that be were using them to represent.
