been having the music/games 'industry' parallel on the mind all the way through games week, and that always leads back to me thinking about steve albini being essentially my standard for the kind of person i want to be in a scene/community. heres a little something from a reddit ama he did ages ago
Connections don't mean shit. I've never had any connections that weren't a natural outgrowth of doing things I was doing anyway. Additionally, the people you might make connections with who work in the industry and value connections themselves, all those people are clueless assholes with no clout anyhow. You can tell because they think they can get somewhere with connections and spend their energy trying to make connections rather than being good at things, and being good at things is the only thing that earns you clout or connections.

It's a myth that you can get anywhere in music through connections. The guy on the other end of the connection has to be into what you're doing, and if you're doing it publicly and he's receptive, he probably hears about it on his own.

Don't worry about anything but making music you like. Everything else is bullshit.
I’ve worded it before as “never network, only engage in communities.” And by that I mean that networking is about what other people can do for you, community is what we all do for each other.
It’s because they hate us and want us dead
This post is a perfect example of someone wording a fundamental concept so well that for a moment it feels like you came up with it or that you always knew it, instead of having learned it right then and there.
I’m a weirdo cus my favourite Zelda is ‘A Link Between Worlds’ and you might think “oh I get it it’s the 3DS one, it must be the only one u had on ur 3DS for your age demographic.” But no I played it last year.
It hits different in a different way when ur the granddaughter of a hong konger who you never met but who was also not allowed to teach her children canto and was encouraged to assimilate.

Like oh my god it’s not a culture I’m “not connected to” it’s one that structures in place denied to my family
Actually, elaborating a bit more.

MTG used to be the best way to explore a unique world. Now it’s always the worst way to explore a world you already know.

Don’t buy FF cards when you can just play FF. Same for fallout, same for watching/reading lord of the rings.
But MTGs world building was ABOUT not knowing! It was small windows into a mysterious world that you ONLY COULD LEARN ABOUT through these small windows.

Universes beyond isn’t *unlike* original MTG worlds, it’s the opposite.

And I hate it.
Sorry to MTG post but I just put into words why I left the hobby.

Universes beyond isn’t just “not MTGs soul” it’s literally THE OPPOSITE of what MTG was good at.

The primary reaction they want from IP in Magic is “Oh I know what that’s a reference to.” It’s a world we *already know*

New “most embarrassing moment of my life” just dropped

Met the CEO of Hipster Whale.

She said “I’m the CEO of hipster whale” while I was taking a sip of my gin and tonic.

I said “Oh my god!” With such surprise that I spat an ice cube onto the ground

Somehow she kept talking to me and it was nice
THATS ME!!

I’m doing a lightning talk at technically games!

Can’t wait! See you there folks!

I truly adore spring so much. It’s not the *blooms* that are amazing, it’s the outpouring of life in general. No season is as drastically new comparatively.

Poorneet is a bit of a rough start to spring with all its wind, it’s true, but there’s another full season of spring before summer proper.
Random pet peeve is the saying “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Have they heard of dice?
It's literally that easy

Built in the 13th century. So that mosque stood for 800 years with every sort of person from every place and every religion in the world passing through Gaza century after century, only for it to be blown up by some shithead loser sitting behind a computer that we probably paid for.

Maybe the thing I hate about “Nostalgia” in media is that it’s rampant commoditisation is actually selling a replacement to history.
Crazy that this is followed immediately by Chapter 24 which can only be described as inferiority complex whaling based lib posting. This book owns dude.
Chapter 23 ‘The Lee Shore’ of Moby Dick might just be one of the best chapters of writing I’ve ever read.

KIM KITSURAGI - "What is it, detective? Can you make it out?"

BULLET - "if you read this you are gay lmao"

1. "It, um, doesn't say anything."

2. "Transgender ideology. My old foe."

3. [Espirit de Corps - Medium 10] "I think you should read it for yourself, Kim."
