🙋‍♂️I've got an article in the new issue of Millennium: Journal of International Studies.

It's about the intimate relationship between liberalism and war and you can find it published open access through the link below.

Interesting for both it’s historical account of US conduct in Vietnam and Afghanistan, and for it articulating a US way of war that is uninterested in signalling any adherence or deference to notions of just war.

Trump: "The problem with Vietnam, we, you know, we stopped fighting to win. We would've won easy. We would've won Afghanistan easy. We would've won every war easy. But we got politically correct. 'Oh, let's take it easy.' We're not politically correct anymore, just so you understand."

“The Onion stands at the ready to act as a mouthpiece of the world’s elite, using its distinguished reportage to parrot whatever the party line happens to be. Genocide, eugenics, incest—no topic is too taboo to find support in our paper so long as it has been approved by a trustworthy establishment”
In Defense Of Mass Censorship
When The Onion’s editorial board convened to discuss the tumultuous events of the previous month, one conclusion became evident: The world stands at a crossroads. Two visions of our collective future ...

This begs the question of why we have collectively chosen to make this such a difficult phenomena to explain.

Why choose the mystification and psychologising when such an obvious and intuitive answer is so readily available?

The hallmarks of settler colonial genocides: offering relief as an opportunity to kill; complete dehumanisation (“zombie hordes”) and an exultation at the infliction of pain & suffering.

Gaza aid contractor tells BBC he saw colleagues fire on hungry Palestinians
The Israel- and US-backed Gaza Humanitarian Foundation has strongly denied the allegation.

After scrambling around trying to find a reason to govern, I’m so thrilled war has furnished him with a purpose.

Thanks Emil, some great ones in here. Really appreciate you taking the time.

Good question. I’m thinking mainly of academics talk about these processes.

Cheers Chris - all added to the list!

I mean, you're not wrong.

Cheers Alex, added to the list! Hopefully something to report about this line of thought in the not too distant future...

Why are the marketing narratives of new (US) military contractors finding their way into the government speeches? Do they offer to write them? The trope of 'peace through strength' for the UK? A defence dividend? ... All of it seems so detached from the realities of war, possibly even politics.

Some good ones there, thanks. I know it's a bit of a broad question, so apologies for that. I'm trying to capture those inter-related (sometimes interchangeable) concepts that speak to how war becomes varyingly possible, thinkable, necessary, legitimate, etc.

Q. I'm assembling a list of the various terms we use to talk about the social processes through which war is produced.

At the moment I have: militarisation, militarism, martial politics, military social harm, war preparedness, everyday modalities of war.

What am I missing and where can I find it?

Don't let the UK govt's confected outrage distract you from the key thing it could do to stop the carnage in Palestine: halt all military collaboration with and arms sales to/from Israel - thanks to @middleeasteye-rss.bsky.social for hosting my piece - www.middleeasteye.net/opinion/uk-r...
Why the UK refuses to do the one thing that could stop Israel's 'intolerable' war on Gaza
Despite harsh words from Lammy, the government has taken the narrowest possible approach to arms restrictions

Every day I learn something new about the casual brutality of Israel's assault on Palestinians. Today it's that Israel is the first air force to use F-35 fighter jets in "beast mode", allowing it to carry more & heavier bombs. I can just imagine the dudes coming up with the name.
