A lovely, insightful interview of Ken Clarke by @lewisgoodall.com here, covering Attlee to Starmer and many things in between.

Working (briefly, very unimportantly) as an adviser to Ken was one of the most enjoyable parts of my career to date. A true original, and a thoroughly decent man
Was a true pleasure to go to Nottingham to interview Ken Clarke, truly the archetypal big political beast.

In an extended conversation, we talk about Reeves nightmare Budget, his long political journey and his fears for where politics might go next.

Neutrality is increasingly problematic in both theory and practice since X became such a toxic platform while so many people continue to use it to consume information.
Wrote this a couple of weeks ago. Feels more relevant still after today. And it’s a deficit of self awareness which goes far beyond some members of the BBC board.

Been worth breaking my holiday from the News Agents for this excellent interview. He's particularly excoriating about debating Budget choices in public

NEW: Marjorie Taylor Green says she will resign from Congress in January

“I have too much self respect and dignity…love my family way too much….to have to endure a hurtful and hateful primary against me by the President we all fought for…it’s all so absurd and completely unserious.”

Some grim polling here for Labour from Ipsos beyond the headline figures

-69% think Britain is heading in the wrong direction
-Starmer's satisfaction rating at -66
-50% of the public want "radical change" yet only 4% believe Labour will deliver it.

Chilling piece on employment effects of AI on early careers. Includes this line, which will probably become the norm for many firms: "Managers at Shopify must now justify hiring a human by first explaining why AI can’t do the job."

Extraordinary story in Poland. Yet more sabotage.

Culpability not yet established, but all eyes will be on Russia. Poland has already arrested a total of 55 people only recently for illegal activities on Russia’s behalf. Hybrid warfare becoming part of European life.

100% right. There is so much about this whole BBC saga that is simply mad but Lewis is right that the Corporation now has the chance to take a stand for something important. It should take that opportunity.
Have written for the New Statesman about why, if he will not accept an apology, the BBC should welcome a Trump lawsuit. They should show guts and fight it because impartially matters and if they don't, they will have tacitly accepted a rewritten history.

This from @lewisgoodall.com on the recent BBC mess is so good. Particularly this bit.

I remember senior, tenured (male, ofc) colleagues at news orgs sneer at suggestions of unconscious bias as if they were immune to it.

How commonplace it all is.

A newish (and chilling) feature of British politics has been Starmer/Reeves increasingly pitching themselves as a quasi technocratic govt, saying bond markets will accept no other. If that’s the strategy, my impression is that Labour MPs do not want to hear it.
