Not even half of my workload as a comics major in one picture

Best graduation pic I took this year
Around a hundred traditional comic pages spread out on the floor and furniture of my old apartment. I sit on the couch looking over the mess.

Adapting books to comics takes more writing chops than people realize, even if the artist doesn’t have to write the story from scratch.

If a comic is filled with prose narration that could’ve been drawn or dialogue that hasn’t been adjusted for comic pacing, it’s an illustrated novel, not a comic.

Anyone have a particularly hot comic take?

Comics aren’t a stepping stone to film or TV adaptation. Sequential art is a rich and varied medium that doesn’t get a fraction of the respect it deserves ESPECIALLY for the amount of labor that goes into it

Try to figure out how a scene could work with no dialogue, and then taking breaks, imagine it a couple more times until you get to the most interesting way to show it play out. Now you're telling the story visually. Reward yourself with the possibility of some dialogue

Following up on my portfolio critique list: Any of you comics writers who teach feel like coming up with a list of 12 Things You Would Probably Tell an Aspiring Writer about their Comic Script?
stevelieberart.bsky.social
Great idea! I'm not the guy to do it, but I'm sure it could be done: "The story starts on page three." "The protagonist's efforts would be more compelling if you established what the stakes are if she fails" etc.

somebody emailed me to ask for tips on finding style, so i'm gonna share my thoughts here, too: first of all, don't worry about what you're good at it, or what you want your art to look like. figure out what's fun about the /process/ for you and lean into those elements!

one very real, concrete way to help feed Gaza right now is through donating to World Central Kitchen
wck.org
WCK’s mobile bakery in Gaza is currently producing 45,000 loaves of bread every day. With more supplies, including flour and fuel, we'd be able to more than double that daily output and support more Palestinian families in need. #ChefsForGaza

Comic folks: Share a favorite dumb sfx gag you came up with.
Line art of a panel I drew from The Fix. A modest duplex in Sherman oaks, CA. Over it we see, in huge letters FAPFAPFAP. This was well received both at my studio, helioscope, and in Sherman Oaks. Panel in progress screenshot from an an issue of Superior Foes of Spider-Man. Beetle is texting, and the sfx is TXT TXT TXT TXT TXT

Working on an OGN pitch rn (on my third drafting pass), and it feels so good to get past a plot that feels very very derivative of my favorite books to something that’s unique enough to have my voice in it, all without changing the characters or genre
