On the one hand, yes, demand answers as to why this happened. But release him now independent of the answer — there is no justification for this. No society that hasn’t hopelessly devolved past the point of return does this to kids. I don’t care whatever they can possibly cook up as an excuse.

I co-wrote a book about Benedict Arnold’s treason, focused on his co-conspirator wife. The difference between Arnold and today’s Republicans is that Arnold did brave things before his betrayal. But he’d likely be gratified that the GOP's actions mean he’s no longer the worst traitor in U.S. history.

American mainstream media orgs, all of them at some level, are complicit in this nonsense. The consolidation of media to pursue ever greater profits has destroyed our national ability to have critical debate in a culturally meaningful way. Fox may be the worst but they all played a role.

Reporters: stop using the deferential term "detaining" when talking about ICE goons' abduction of innocent people from US streets. You proper term would indeed by "abduction", but if you want to pretend neutrality you could use "capture", which at least says nothing about the captors' motives.
