None of what happened in his working life would have been possible without the education he received from the Ragged Schools Union. Not only that it meant that his family grew up in Dover rather than a London slum.

Soon after leaving school, he applied to join the Metropolitan Police. We have a certificate from the school pertaining to his scholarly record and his character.

He was accepted into the force, and stayed until 1914, when he transferred to work at Dover Priory station.

Frederick Jones grew up in Southwark, South London, born to two drunkards in poverty.

He attended one of the local 'ragged schools'.

Things I saved from my parent's house:

A Lilliput Lane model of a cottage in Lowestoft to remember Mum.

A 2 litre stein I bought for Dad for his last Christmas in 2015.

And assorted other memories from the house.

This green bird is the Spotted Catbird (Ailuroedus melanotis), a rainforest bird of West Papua (but also found in Australia and parts of Indonesia). Locally known as “Kuansu,” it gets its name from its cat-like, wailing call.

14 hours of sleep.

Feeling drained. But coughing mostly stopped.

At last.

Every Lady #Orchid is different in some way, I like this one with huge "hands".

From the 2018 season.

Oh look, the "temporary" stand at Gillingham is still there, though now covered in advertising rather than actual fans.

A sickly yellow White Helleborine, Cephalanthera damasonium probably var. chloritica.

From 2018. The plant appeared once since, but the whole wood lost all orchids, White Helleborines and Bird's Nest #Orchids, probably due to snails and slugs in the winter of 2023.

Pink cap orchid - Caladenia clarkiae - near Genoa, East Gippsland, VIC.

This is probably the pinkest form of this small cap orchid I have seen in East Gippsland - although plants with almost entirely reddish/pink flowers are found in some locations.

Diuris orientis (eastern donkey orchid / wallflower orchid) in open grassland near the Genoa River, East Gippsland, VIC.

More out this spring than the last few years but didn't see any of the 100% yellow forms which occasionally occur here.

Interesting tall leek orchid (Prasophyllum elatum) form with green stems + green/yellow flowers near Mallacoota, East Gippsland, VIC. Just a few scattered plants flowering this year surrounded by large numbers of the more common black-stemmed forms - but with almost no intergrades #orchids #ozplants

Thank you, It is.

Seeing it from about 2m away, after searching for five years, was quite the emotional experience.

First flowers are out on the patch of sun orchids just behind the house at home in Corunna, NSW. These early plants are probably closer to TheIymitra peniculata (trim sun orchid) than anything else - although later plants usually show more variation, with some maybe closer to T. pauciflora #orchids
