Tetris.

Without its previous protagonist (Soviet era communism) or its current protagonist (Tetsuya Mizuguchi), it ceases to exist

What video game franchise couldn't survive without its current protagonist?

A tv show from 2002 has a character look on the internet for important information

Me in 2010: ha, that’s ridiculous, the internet was nothing compared to now

Me in 2025: i miss when the internet had things on it, and you could search for and find the things

I should be ecstatic that one of my favorite games of all time is being remade. However, the original PD Zwei still plays so amazingly well, you can only make it worse by remaking it.

There is no upside other than making an (inferior) version of that experience available to more people.

Hopefully they don’t file a blanket trademark on video games and announce an industry-wide cease and desist. At this point that seems more likely than a new Wave Race game.

What’s funny is Silksong might be one of the few exceptions to exist in a very long while
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
It’s fascinating because budget pricing has either been to stamp out less fiscally resourceful competition or a desperation play to break into a market dominated by more powerful players. Given everything that goes into making video games, at no point has it ever been sustainable.
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
…perhaps more waves than EA was comfortable with. It cut into Madden 2005 sales enough that they had to cut its price to compete. Ahead of the following season, EA fashioned an exclusivity deal with the league to effectively secure a monopoly, which they’ve continued to renew since.

Yep, that’s the one — it’s still one of my favorite sports games ever. The gameplay feels timeless and the community still supports it with roster updates today (at least on Xbox, not sure about PS2).

But back in ‘04, it was critically acclaimed and Sega’s decision to sell it at $20 made waves…
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
I remember being ecstatic back when NFL 2K5, NBA 2K5, and NHL 2K5 launched at $20 (and less ecstatic when EA retaliated w/ the exclusivity deal).

Adjusted for inflation, that’d be almost twice as much as the $20 Silksong costs today. Utterly wild.

Hello. I wrote a nice long essay about AI and this very strange moment where we're constantly told we're living in the dawn of a strange new future but the only thing that's actually clear is that everyone feels pretty unmoored and uncertain. I hope you'll read it
AI Is a Mass-Delusion Event
Three years in, one of AI’s enduring impacts is to make people feel like they’re losing it.

And that’s just the sandwiches. Many restaurants apply that same approach to salads, too.
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
I’ve gotten about halfway there with some decent salt beef sandwiches. Cobs/baps and toasties dominate here in the midlands but the aversion to veggies/dressings/spices renders most of them super bland. The irony is the meats and cheeses are incredible but putting everything together proves elusive.

Context: I also grew up w/ Quiznos in the US and had one below my office for several years. I’m well versed in its mediocrity but 1) the relative sandwich options here are dire and 2) nostalgia is a hell of a drug
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
I won’t, the train/tube is slightly faster than that

Just found out there’s a Quiznos I could go to three hours away in the London suburbs and I’m considering it

There may never be another Wave Race in this god forsaken future of ours but a random 2025 port of 1996’s Aqua Jet is precisely the soldier we need to help us float on

Spot on. And even beyond the advancements in tech and convenience, how we enjoy games has also changed. I’m a significantly more curious and creative person now than when I was a kid and that’s opened up far more interesting ways to play and appreciate games today. Why would I ever want to go back?
jetbrianradio.bsky.social
I don’t think our brains were prepared for all the ways social media can scramble them. I just got back from a trip with limited internet access (at best) and am realizing how depressing and anxiety-inducing it feels to scroll these feeds. SM simply isn’t filling the social void it helps perpetuate.
