Hello new followers! I'm Jess (they/them), and I'm a newly minted Assistant Professor at U University of Alaska Anchorage! I study evolutionary genomics, mostly in birds, and mainly post my various (mis)adventures and pet pictures. Welcome!
Jess leans against a purple computer in a shared lab space. They are grinning like the absolute dork they are.

Gotta be honest I didn't either, never really thought about it and assumed it was a 50/50 chance of being an American thing

I try not to be a "read the damn syllabus" person but the dates are, in fact, on the syllabus, and I update them as needed throughout the semester.
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
Apparently some of my students thought class was canceled this week, just to balance all the ones who didn't realize it *was* canceled last week?

Of course someone who makes eating raw eggs a load-bearing part of their personality wouldn't understand that the majority of people on earth like to eat things that taste good

As a matter of fact I'm definitely on board with swapping "western civilization" or whatever for a reasonable assortment of street food and a good doner wrap

going by the decor, is this not TGI Fridays?
Someone on Twitter posted a photo of themselves doing a happy dance as they receive a hot plate of fajitas. Then "Raw Egg Nationalist" on Twitter retweets them, writing: It's incredible that these people exist, but they really do. These are the people who justify the demographic replacement of Western countries in terms of the variety of street food and how many different kinds of fried-meat-and-vegetables in flatbread they can buy.

This is true and they are super endangered by poachers who shovel them up by the hundreds and sell them at flea markets and shit. You should not buy the plants and if you happen to kick the poacher in the shins on accident, no one will hear about it from me.

still amazing to me the number of movies, games, etc. which have Venus Flytrap-based creatures in some form compared to the actual native range of Venus Flytrap, which is like, the great untamed jungles of a few wet pine savannas in North Carolina
map illustrating the native range of Venus Flytrap plants, just a little half circle around coastal North and South Carolina in USA

fair, we have one activity where i printed a bunch of tiny dragons for phylogeny building and that's just fun for everyone

i have one in the lab and it's literally saved me thousands of dollars because i can fabricate equipment and models on the spot. yet the university keeps promoting "use AI in your classes!", when my students like Giant Molecule Models waaay more than the plagiarism box

Actually, I'm going to throw my hat out: would anybody like to have me on their podcast/newsletter to talk about Appalachian pulp, folklore, witchlore, and the benefits of weirding historical fiction? I think these stories are good, and I want to talk about them!

Fuck Prime Day. PDFs of GHOST DAYS and IN THE SNOW, THE JUNGLE are on sale for just 3$ today, which means you can grab this fully illustrated short story collection AND its followup novella for just $6.

just to antagonize the east coast crowd, one of my favorite pitstops up here serves a sourdough furikake bagel with scallion cream cheese, alder-smoked black cod (caught locally), sour pickled onion, preserved lemon, and mustard blossoms and yes i know that's bougie af and i do not care, i love it
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
my understanding is that with the curing + smoking, freezing won't diminish it too much
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
fair enough, i will be the first to admit i have a strong west coast hipster streak in my culinary leanings

in alaska we can sourdough *anything* lmao

honestly it works well, i've done homemade ones a few times. there's just a bit of tang to the flavor that works great with fat in the schmear
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
ooooh i need to try this, i have smoked salmon roe in the freezer from this summer 👀
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
i await your judgment

sourdough everything bagel, lightly toasted (just enough to warm it up), scallion or sundried tomato cream cheese, smoked sockeye salmon

optional but if i'm making it at home, required: fresh dill, fresh chives, pickled onions

i assume this makes me non-electable in NYC but i like my chances in AK
erinbiba.bsky.social
One of my favorite things about NYC is whenever anyone runs for office here they are required to disclose their bagel order.

alas my sourdough starter died and i keep forgetting to get a replacement from my friend who is far better at keeping hers alive, so can't make any this weekend

i have run into people who claim it flat-out did not happen or that it was greatly exaggerated, including that the name was intentionally chosen to conflate it with the Holocaust (despite the earliest uses of the term with an alternate transliteration prior to WWII, as i understand it)
jfmclaughlin92.bsky.social
for sure, but also there's also more actual people i know buying into it too, which feels different than before?
