I'm John, a freelance fantasy #illustrater for #TTRPG players and publishers. I do private and published commissions, sell commercial stock art and create fan-crossover works.

Links are in my bio, and my commercial license is readable from my website: www.johnlattaart.com

A warforged in a blue hooded cape strides forward and picks a huge great sword with a custom ricasso from a smoldering point at their feet. A woman in full plate armor and tabard skirting with a neon pink halo stands in front of two neon-pink spectral spears. Her hand glows pink with power. A goblin barbarian equipped with two bone war-glaives, wearing a giant rat's skull as a helmet along with various other stretched leathers and furs creeps through a flooded tunnel, a cropped cutaway off a feed-tunnel with dirt water spill behind them. An owlbear in a dense copse of trees confronts a huge swarm of zombies that struggle to take it down.

Hi, for those who don't know, it doesn't matter one single iota if your project is "free". You do not have the rights to use art you find and distribute it. That's literally what licensing is for.
Your circumstance and goal has nothing to do with whether you are allowed to use anyone's art.

"sorry I caught you off guard with the post. In the dnd homebrew space it isn't standard practice to gen in contact with artists for incorporation their work, provided that they are adequately credited and that the homebrew work is available for free, both of which are the case here."
johnlattaart.bsky.social
And also, like @alliebriggsart.bsky.social said originally, just by talking to us. Find us and reach out. We're not hiding.
johnlattaart.bsky.social
Should temper this by "this shouldn't be a thing", but sadly I do know its everywhere, and the longer it goes unchecked, the more likely we'll have huge companies breathing down our necks doing the sa-
-ah.
Yup.
Uh-huh.
johnlattaart.bsky.social
Bas is right, in like the wild West of homebrew, this is what passes as "ethical/professional", and is also very, very at home with the seedier side of way too many 3p business practices. Any artist who's written or filed for DMCAs through online third party sellers has experienced it.
johnlattaart.bsky.social
For sure. A long standing culture of "apologize laters" turns into "business as usuals". Decades of fractured or missing professional guidelines, and added bad actors nurtures it. The main other place we're encountering this attitude is the genAI companies and users. bsky.app/profile/basi...
basiliskonline.bsky.social
it sadly is absolutely standard practice in the homebrew community, in that like 99% of them do it. It is not standard practice in that it is OKAY or SHOULD be done. Glad Allie called this shit out!
johnlattaart.bsky.social
I mean yeah, it's 💯 why the homebrew circle and genAI boosters share a lot of Venn diagram real estate out here.

Periodically re-upping this b/c alas, things ain't great overall. Acute needs are all met, and I hate passing around the hat for myself, but I'd rather be like "hey, if I could fund another month while I still have savings and budget, that's MUCH more comfortable" than panic, y'know?
jazzelves.bsky.social
Speaking of unemployable, I'm not in anywhere near as tight a squeeze as I was this time last year, but it costs me about $1K for living expenses each month and that do put a squeeze on things. So if you've got any to spare and feel like helping out, my tip jar is always open: ko-fi.com/jazzelves
johnlattaart.bsky.social
Even if your license isn't much more than "hey, go ahead and use this in your publications" and the fee is PWYW, or free even, it still both implies and stipulates a consent that you don't otherwise have.
johnlattaart.bsky.social
This isn't a thing in any creative circles, ever. The only time you don't need to talk to an artist about using their work in your publication is if you buy their stock art, which comes with a license that covers a conversation about rights, usage. This person's explanation is extra ripe bullshit.

"it isn't standard practice", like just acknowledge you've never been called out before and move on bro, wtf is this 'appeal to standards' you pulled out of your ass.
Allie, this person is giving me rage in the same way you're getting exposure.
johnlattaart.bsky.social
Huh. "credits artists", but fails to mention whether they were contacted in the first place. This isn't even direct exposure, this "free" publication they offer links to their Ko-fi, commissions and contact info, which means it's an unpaid advertisement.
Generously, this is second hand exposure. 🫠

It might not seem like much. But if ANYONE use ANY artist's work to distribute product for profit or not for profit, without the artist's permission, it's stealing.

I know there might be some people who will say, "but it's exposure!"

No. Full stop. PAY THE ARTIST.

Yup. We've all seen the imbeciles who run and organize capitalism's musical chairs playing and proposing genAI as the future it isn't.
All the statistical data which Zuckerberg touted to convince media executives that everything you publish from now on should be in video format, turned out to be false. Inflated viewership times which accounted for anywhere up to ’60 to 80 percent’ of their data simply wasn’t real. Facebook knew the data was false as early as 2015 and intentionally covered it up. Thousands of people lost their jobs over a lie and the damage was done. Nevertheless, media executives continued to follow Zuckerberg’s data because they wanted a share of his enormous wealth.

Then in 2019, Zuckerberg tried to convince us that the ‘Metaverse’ was the hot new item to change the world. We were about to hold all our staff meetings inside a virtual world. We would no longer interact in boring old ‘meatspace’ (i.e. real life) but from now on, we will place a VR headset over our eyes and reserve all of our education, entertainment and business for the Metaverse. After losses in the tens of billions of dollars, claims of widespread sexual harrassment on the platform and many of the promised ‘worlds’ never getting past the planning stage, he announced in 2023 that his company would be moving away from the Metaverse. 10,000 people were laid off. He was wrong again.

Well, perhaps ‘wrong’ isn’t the right word. Both projects made him even more of a billionaire so they weren’t the wrong choice as far as his finances were concerned.

And that’s why all of these ventures begin. In the eyes of tech CEOs, it’s never about changing the world, improving how we function as a society, or helping us spend more valuable time with our loved ones. From the beginning, it was only ever about one thing: putting more commas in Zuckerberg’s bank account. Either so he could add more thousands of acres to his $300 million Hawaii compound or to ‘donate’ millions of dollars to guarantee government assistance in those pesky anti-trust lawsuits.

Wth Quinn, this is good poetry.

I used to do poetry back in the day too, but I haven't exercised that muscle in like two decades now. Great observation about the underlying link.
I think this is why I like cooking as well.

one of our players got a pretty wild mutation today #wfrp4e
A new body grows on the back of your body and tears loose in excruciating pain. The twin is identical to you in every way; in appearance, Characteristics, Skills, Talents and Mutations. Both of you are completely covered by pink scar tissue on the back of your entire body, from head to toe, where you separated. Whether its because you share one soul or because your minds have some magical link, you have a telepathic bond and can communicate thoughts and feelings to each other as an Action regardless of distance. You always know in which direction your twin is. Through the bond you share you also share Wounds (but not Critical Wounds, Conditions, Psychology or Diseases) - if one dies so does the other! The twin becomes a new Character or NPC (that could be controlled by the same Player or the GM) that will develop their own Motivation, Short and Long Term Ambitions, and they will individually accumulate XP and Corruption from the point of their birth. You can only gain this mutation once.

What's the latest excuse for bothsidesing colonization and apartheid culminating in a livestreamed genocide?
@BarackObama After two years of unimaginable loss and suffering for Israeli families and the people of Gaza, we should all be encouraged and relieved that an end to the conflict is within sight; that those hostages still being held will be reunited with their families; and that vital aid can start reaching those inside Gaza whose lives have been shattered. More than that, though, it now falls on Israelis and Palestinians, with the support of the U.S. and the entire world community, to begin the hard task of rebuilding Gaza – and to commit to a process that, by recognizing the common humanity and basic rights of both peoples, can achieve a lasting peace.
