And FWIW here’s my write-up, with another pic because why not I’m flying home and exhausted.

“Americans aren’t used to competition” is a worthy story to tell and interesting in its own right, but the careful avoidance of acknowledging the role reversal here is sort of ick.

This is a good article but it also reads wrong to me. Millions of people have had to navigate “the psychological impact of having a machine looking at you all the time that’s devoted to killing you” over the last 15 years. US troops just aren’t used to facing it themselves; it was always others.

“I don’t think the reality of what drones mean on the battlefield has really sunk in for the U.S. Army,” said Lt. Gen. Barno, a former commander in Afghanistan. “We certainly haven’t encountered the psychological impact of having a machine looking at you all the time that’s devoted to killing you”

And just for fun, here’s an image of me speaking with my hands, since there are no photos of me speaking without my hands (I’m a hand flapper).
A woman in a black dress with dark brown hair looks quizzically to her left at a middle aged homosexual with short hair and glasses in a blue suit gesitculates wildly. Both are sitting down in a gilt room with a gauzed window in the background. A vase of fake sunflowers is visible in the background.

George Osborn gave a nice write up to the breakout session I ran with Maria Burns Ortiz, the executive director of the Global Games Jam, in Riga this past week. I’m proud of this work and I’m glad other people see value in it as well.

i really hope the riyadh comedy festival is seen in retrospect as the the Rogan/anti-woke "Comedy" world's high-water mark - an unavoidable symbol of how these "comedians" are willing to sell out their "free speech" values to the highest bidder, revealing the hollowness of their project

Countries in central Asia and the Caucasus are distancing themselves from Moscow and forging deeper ties with rivals like China, the European Union, Turkey, or the Gulf states.
e.g. Kazakhstan's largest trading partner is China and they support international security guarantees for Ukraine.

The study itself is fine, but considering it counted e-readers as “books” and not “screens,” maybe take the high level framing with a bit of salt.

That said, I’m on book 12 of CJ Cherryh’s “Foreigner” series and it’s fantastic.

"There are no women on this list," Dr. Oransky observed. "Men are nine times more likely to retract papers for misconduct than women are," even after controlling for publication rates.

Whole lotta Gender happening in scientific fraud, too!

Dr. Oransky warned of consequences for self-governance failure: "If you don't self-police, if you don't correct the record, if you don't sanction people who commit fraud, [...] someone else will come in and do that. And it very well could be a government that you don't like."
Is Science Retracting Enough Papers?
As paper mills and fraud proliferate, experts warn the retraction rate should reach 2% of published literature—ten times current levels.

“Do they give Nobel Peace Prizes to war criminals, Minna?”
“All the time. Aung San Suu Kyi, Henry Kissinger, and also the prize you think, it is not the Peace Prize.”
“Oh, don’t start with that.”
“It is a second tier peace price. It is made of very hard plastic.”

The Qalqan exhibit by Ukrainian ceramic artist Rustem Skybin, “Symbols of Crimean Tatars,” is simply jaw dropping.

“Diamonds are Trumps” (1931), Jānis Tidemanis. Oil on canvas.
An oil painting, very dark with muted pops of color. Four men, highly impressionistic and almost indistinguishable, in a circle holding playing cards. The only visible suit is an ace of diamonds.

The Džemma Skulme exhibit at the Latvian National Museum of Art is pretty stunning, btw
“Folk Song” (1969) by Džemma Skulme, an expressive painting in dark reds and tinted whites of a woman with a pained expression sitting down. It is hard to describe.
