I just returned from a summit in which people discussed how close we are to nuclear war (quite) and the prospect of boldly increasing nuclear weapon production (staggering) but the issue of how we are to define our reality is the one I worry about the most.
jrmorber.bsky.social
I keep pondering what we can do about this. Pivot to paper? A new slew of AI countering apps in a reality parsing arms race? A culture that rejects the idea of an objective reality altogether? AI-free labels provided by some independent source?
jrmorber.bsky.social
With the advent of Sonos video and audio in which reality is (be honest) indistinguishable from reality, I do not know how any of us, and especially the greater public will be able to parse what is real from what is not.

In a recent talk @jbenbradford.bsky.social noted that most communities have 0-1 local news sources, only 10% of households subscribe to a newspaper, website news traffic is ⬇️ 40%, YouTube and social media are the main news source for most Americans

Love everything from Alicia Inez Guzmán, who covers nuclear weapons and Los Alamos for Searchlight New Mexico. Great piece here will get you up to speed on an issue (plutonium pit aging!) that seems inscrutable but that Alícia makes relevant and comprehensible:

Trump is shocked at how easy it was to turn the US into a personalist dictatorship (we're squarely on the way but not quite there) & claims to be having a lot of fun
All these actions reflect a buoyed commander-in-chief who feels emboldened to go further after feeling as though he has faced surprisingly little resistance to his ambitious agenda in the first 9 months. He has even remarked to aides that he is shocked how easy it is all proven to be.

While the war in Ukraine continues to bedevil Trump, causing him the most frustrations, he doesn't face the discontent, sniping and disagreements that characterized his first term, said David Urban, a long time ally. " This time, he's having way more fun," Urban said.

If this was happening in any other country you'd have journalists and analysts discussing risks of state failure

Via Matt Parker’s book Humble Pi, a million seconds is 11 days and 14 hours. A billion is over 31 years. A trillion seconds from now is the year 33700.

I have advanced degrees in engineering. I got As in complex calculus and mathematics classes. Yet every time I am confronted with the difference between a million, billion, and trillion, I am blown away.

Ladies—do not give up your power. Recently I attended a conference in which an accomplished young woman began her talk with “now is a good time to fall asleep.” She undercut herself before she even started. The man after her said “I want you to listen to me.” Yeah.

Update: WGN-TV, without naming the employee, said she has been released from Border Patrol custody without charges. WGN-TV says it can't release her identity because of an internal newsroom policy.

Meet Hilda. I was one of her doctors. When she died, she left 2 sons behind. My grief about her situation brought anger and then determination.

A #skeetorial on outcomes, advocacy, and policy in dialysis access for undocumented immigrants.

Picture how big the Hoover Dam is. An absolute unit. The Hoover Dam has a power capacity of 2 gigawatts (GW).

The solar farm that the Admin just cancelled could have produces 6.2 GW of power. That's more than 3 Hoover Dams.

SCOOP: The Bureau of Land Management says the largest solar project in Nevada — the Esmeralda 7 mega-farm — has been canceled

The news was quietly dropped via a sudden website update with no public word from any of the companies involved or a statement from the agency

Esmeralda 7 Solar Project Has Been Canceled, BLM Says
It would have delivered a gargantuan 6.2 gigawatts of power.

a high armhole allows for freer and more comfortable movement
Joey Mannarino in a dark brown tailored jacket. The low armhole is causing his jacket to lift. Someone in an inflatable frog costume. The high armhole allows them to raise their arm without disturbing the rest of the garment

I don’t mean to alarm people but I learned today that we are much closer to nuclear war than I thought. I guess that was always a risk at a nuclear focused conference but I was kinda hoping it would be the opposite.

Friends, the first thing we must think to ourselves, every time we see an image or video now, is “is this AI?”
