Important piece from @cjdenial.bsky.social on the use (or not) of Generative AI in the classroom.
cocchino.bsky.social
Food for though. I've struggled to balance genAI use in my classes. I've allowed it, required it, and banned it in different contexts. I found this op-ed useful for thinking through what is gained & lost and how we can make space for learning through other means #AcademicBluesky

Very happy and proud to share the #Spirogyra genome: 50 Mbp small, lacking almost all plastid division proteins and many transcription factors. Kudos to all the many people involved in this multi year project!

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

🌱 SPECIAL ISSUE RESEARCH 🌱

🔬 ECLIPSE is a potential adaptor protein that links ubiquitinated inner nuclear membrane proteins to the CDC48 complex, facilitating their degradation and maintaining nuclear membrane integrity in plants - Calvanese et al.

🔗 doi.org/10.1093/jxb/...

#PlantScience 🧪
Fig. 1 (shortened, full legend in paper): ECLIPSE is closely associated with plant INMAD components. (A) Schematic diagram illustrating the identification of potential INMAD components using proximity labeling with SUN1 and PUX5 as baits. SUN1, a substrate of the INMAD pathway, undergoes polyubiquitination by unidentified E3 ligases. The ubiquitinated SUN1 is recognized by a potential adaptor protein, which facilitates the recruitment of CDC48 for subsequent retrotranslocation and degradation of SUN1. PUX5 is a previously reported negative regulator of the INMAD pathway, which interacts with CDC48 and functions to prevent SUN1 degradation. (B) Reanalysis of previously published MS data obtained from proximity labeling proteomics using HA-BioID2-SUN1 and PUX5-BioID2-HA transgenic plants. Specific proteins probed by each bait were identified using biotin mock-treated transgenic plants as controls.

100% this: we need to make scientific writing accessible to all researchers, teachers and students. #accessibility #inclusion
Reviewers need to be aware of this. Clear communication is not “immature” or “frivolous”.

Dear

Thank you very much for contacting me about your concerns regarding access to Covid-19 vaccination for Clinically Vulnerable people. Please accept my apologies for the delay in responding to your email.

I am pleased to be able to confirm that the new Labour government is committed to strengthening our public health response and reducing health inequalities. Labour's recent commitments and statements have made clear that the principle of universal and fair access to vaccines particularly for those who are medically at-risk must be central to our national strategy.

In Parliament, Labour MPs have called for a rapid review of JCVI eligibility criteria and for the reinstatement of free Covid-19 vaccination for all Clinically Vulnerable people, in line with the existing approach to NHS flu vaccinations. Many have highlighted, as you do, that the logic and evidence for including all at-risk groups in annual booster rollouts are overwhelming, given the ongoing pandemic context and emergence of new variants.

Our party's manifesto commits to taking advice from clinicians and scientists and to working closely with NHS England to ensure that support for the most vulnerable is not withdrawn on cost grounds especially when this may lead to greater suffering and increased NHS pressure. There is widespread concern across Parliament about the risk of deepening health inequality and placing the cost burden of essential preventative care onto those least able to shoulder it.

Thank you again for taking the time to share your concerns so powerfully.

Best wishes,

Dr Beccy Cooper MP

This is followed by gender pay gap, pension gap, health gap; slow career progression, harassment and violence, unpaid carer work, retirement insecurity.
