Some of these people have now been fired and rehired TWICE since January. The current state of dysfunction is mind boggling.

OOOPS! UPDATE: Two HHS officials tell me that disease detectives, measles response officers, global health officials and the MMWR staff were laid off by mistake and will be reinstated. But Washington office is still RIFed

BREAKING: Friday night massacre underway at CDC. Doznes of "disease detectives," high-level scientists, entire Washington staff and editors of the MMWR (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report) have all been RIFed and received the following notice:

Some personal news: after more than a decade with @msf.ca, today is my last day as the Humanitarian Representative to Canada for Doctors Without Borders.
Serving in this role has been the privilege of a lifetime and I’m leaving feeling inspired by the work that MSF does.
The author is standing in front of 3 white Land Cruiser vehicles, wearing blue jeans and a white MSF vest, with one hand on a vehicle and the other on his hip. He is smiling. He is standing in a dirt parking lot, the dirt is a light brown colour, that also has tinted the white Land Cruiser vehicles with dust.

I feel profoundly grateful and humbled to have been given the chance to make a difference in this world and am taking away from this experience the need to act with principle, with moral clarity, and moral consistency - to continue to do good things.
To everyone I’ve met along the way: thank you.

Working in medical humanitarian assistance, as in healthcare more generally, is deeply personal work. Working for an organization made up of thousands of people that work to alleviate suffering and restore dignity amidst chaos and inhumanity is a remarkable thing.
jwnickerson.bsky.social
I continue to believe in the work that MSF does and I honestly believe that our organization not only continues to challenge the status quo of what’s possible to do in terms of bringing high quality medical care to difficult places, but acts as an important counterbalance in the world.
jwnickerson.bsky.social
This work has changed me, profoundly, as a person. A decade of meeting people, hearing their stories, and working to help bring medical care to some of the most challenging places on earth are all things that should change a person, and it has.

This is why we fund scientists to study things like oyster slobber even if you don’t think it sounds important
leahmcelrath.bsky.social
⚠️ Chinese researchers have invented bone glue that mimics how oysters stick to surfaces underwater.

The adhesive can reportedly repair orthopedic fractures in 2-3 minutes, even in blood-rich environments, and is bioabsorbable.

Canada Post “lost” 1 billion dollars last year?

How about, “it cost Canadians 1 billion dollars to have a national postal service” which works out to costing about $25 a year per person (population of Canada in 2024 = 40 million). Seems like a pretty reasonable cost to me.
julieslalonde.bsky.social
"Canada Post is on track to lose money" Hum. Duh. It cost less than a toonie to send a letter across Canada.

"Canada Post is a service and not a business" was common knowledge until late stage capitalism brain rotted most people into think if it ain't making money for shareholders, it's failing.

It's unfortunate that the op-ed @jwnickerson.bsky.social and I wrote last year on putting that publicly-owned pharmaceutical manufacturing facility to good (or indeed any) use could basically just be reprinted verbatim today.

I took some extended time off from MSF this summer - some time to trade crisis meetings for trail running, cold lakes, and a long scramble up to Ishpatina Ridge (Ontario’s highest point).
It wasn’t just time off, it was a summer of practicing nervous system regulation & recovery. Some thoughts:
A picture of the author standing on top of Ishpatina Ridge. The author is taking a selfie and is in the foreground wearing a black raincoat, and blue hat, smiling at the camera. In the background are lush, green trees and in the far distance high, rolling hills can be seen blanketed with trees in a typical Northern Ontario forest. The sky is cloudy with patches of blue sky, and to the right it is clearly raining far off from where the photo is taken. The sun is bright.

That’s why I’m focusing on human factors + simulation in crisis diplomacy this year.
And why I’m leaning on practices like breathwork, mindfulness, and recovery, in my own leadership.
👉 Calm is contagious. These skills aren’t luxuries - they’re essential tools.

Humanitarian diplomacy faces the same problem.
We often work in “smash teams”: skilled people, who have never worked together before, scattered across continents, making high-consequence decisions.
Without systems + shared understanding, we can stumble or miss critical moments.
Human factors matter.
jwnickerson.bsky.social
In emergencies, we talk about stress + burnout.
But a pressing issue remains: how do we prepare teams to perform under pressure?
Medicine has studied this for decades:
✅Shared mental models
✅Clear roles
✅Training non-technical skills
Without these, even brilliant people can fail, together.

Friends, I’m taking a break for the coming months to rest, recharge, and rebalance a bit. I’ve been spending less time on here and will be spending more time on trails, on my bike, and on the water over the summer. I hope your summers are restful and peaceful and adventure-packed. Do cool stuff. ✌️
