I'm sure there are super valid criticisms of all game industries/companies and valid criticisms that indie devs can say about big companies (Japanese included) but some folks were def just "Japanse games suck", mocking jrpgs, etc. Mocking what wasn't Halo/Gears, etc.

I do remember in the 2000s, arounnd the time Microsoft consoles were more popular, that people were talking shit about Japanese games in a way that made me uncomfortable... I remember the Fez developer getting in trouble for similiar comments.

It felt real "American Exceptionalism"

Some people just like a game because they think it's cute and they like the characters. That's fine, but I really gotta like the game overall. I give certain genres a bit more of a pass on gameplay like some horrors if the atmosphere is awesome. Not action games, though.

This week in 1988: 1,000+ ACT UP demonstrators shut down the FDA headquarters, demanding (and eventually winning) action on developing HIV/AIDS treatments. ACT UP's militant and creative actions always included powerful visual artwork, and paved the way for movements in the decades to come.

Really liked the "The Summer Hikaru Died" anime. Super atmospheric and very cool looking show. Also, yeah, intense queer/horror story that's existential.

I wonder if the anime is getting more episodes?

Was a little late to finishing The Summer Hikaru Died. Really cannot stress enough how drop-dead amazing it is. Terrific adaptation of a phenomenal comic that only elevates the story of internalized homophobia and violent self-hatred into a moving work of painful queerness. Thorny, sticky, scary.
