Kirby Air Riders just had the biggest launch for a Kirby spin off in Japan, more than twice that of the GameCube original.

I think how the companies promote (or don't) the various designs makes a huge difrence.
If this was the only way they drew women it would still be a problem as its only representing a fraction of humanity but they don't.
Characters are promoted to kids with more body types and less male gaze.
