She only spoke for a second before handing the receiver back. The clerk hung up and they exchanged a few more gestures and words before she turned around.
It was her, all right. Same eyes, same face shape, same lips, same hair. Heather Dean, in the flesh. What was she doing here? Who had she called?
But I knew both of those answers already, didn’t I?
Her gaze tracked idly across the lobby, past the glass doors. Then back to them. No, she shouldn’t be able to see me, even with her enhanced vision. It was full night outside and she stood in a brightly lit interior. Yet I swear those eyes snagged on me through the doors, through the darkness, and across the parking lot.
Then, worse: a knowing smile. Like a handshake, there and gone in the same breadth of time. Like we were on the same side and she hadn’t just been fucking up my life for the past week.
