We don't talk enough about how Ohio is a failed state, or our global obligation to intervene and save them

Ohio zoomer voters man...
Republican Vivek Ramaswamy held a 10-point lead over Democrat Amy Acton in a hypothetical gubernatorial matchup: 49 to 39 percent, with 12 percent undecided. Acton gained name recognition as the state’s public health director through the Covid-19 pandemic, earning her the support of Ohio’s Democratic base — and placing her in the crosshairs of conservatives as outrage bubbled over about the state’s controversial school closures.

While Acton is currently the only declared Democratic candidate for governor, former Rep. Tim Ryan has also been mulling tossing his hat in the ring. But a potential contest between Ryan and Ramaswamy showed the Republican leading 49 percent to 41 percent, with 10 percent undecided.

According to the Emerson poll, Ramaswamy’s strength lies in his support among younger voters — the onetime presidential candidate outperformed Husted with voters under 30 by five points.

Well, ja, but that's more at, say, my work where we're shipping Windows exes with commit histories dating back to the 90s

Here they looked at ActivityPub, a working decentralized microblogging-centric protocol, and said "we can do better"

by which they meant it didn't smell enough like Blockchain

What if we told them it would help TERFs coordinate, they might bump the priority way up in their bugtracker

"Sorry, we can't do that, that's super hard with the protocol we desig—I mean, the protocol left behind by the ancients, really this place only works at all because of the eureka moment of a single crackpot archaeologist"

It's wild that we have gone so far into Headphone Jack Removal world that we don't have analog door handles on some cars

My "windows should still be cranks, making this stuff electric is asking for problems" opinion from my childhood stays sadly winning

There's some wild lapses though, like early on in Legends where they go "here's the perfect cover to blend in with high society in Soviet Russia: I will masquerade as a wealthy businessman"

There's numbers that I can't "remember" these days that if you put a phome keypad in front of me and said like "call Greg" my fingers would just retrace the groove carved in my brain

Every time I look at anything related to One Piece it’s always so off-putting and hideous. I literally don’t understand why people willingly consume it. No disrespect.

I was never gonna bother reading or watching One Piece, my longstanding rule of "no truly great anime went past 26 episodes" having never steered me wrong before, but with this endorsement I'm gonna somehow extra not

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.

Every time Trudeau Jr tried to do anything equivalent to Just Watch Me it was (a) for something lame like a weird overcomplicated corruption scheme with a charity run by liars or whatever, and (b) the whinest that any failson has ever whined

This pattern repeats in almost every field where beneficial outcomes are suppressed because they are ideologically at odds with whoever is in power. See also, LGBTQ+ rights, socialised healthcare…

An additional upside is support lasts much longer, since it's a collaborative effort of nerds around the world rather than software made by a company trying to sell hardware and online services. I'm happily running an old Pixel 4a right now, for example.

You can also get any phone supported by LineageOS, flash LineageOS on it to replace the corporate distro of Android with a community one which gives you much greater choice in which fundamental parts are installed, and choose to just use zero "AI" bits.

That sort of position remains pretty personally caustic to people in their lives then, but that's certainly at least minimizing the perpetuation of more formal structural harms which definitely puts them on the opposite end of American Christianity from the worst people

…so they’re not forming a personal relationship with God through his word, they’re using intermediaries to interpret it for them? Hmmm, very interesting, hmmm

Based on the interviews I've done with conservative Evangelical moms, I'd say--a lot of them aren't engaging with the Bible directly. They're reading Evangelical self-help and parenting books like Your Best Life Now and Growing Kids God's Way that selectively interpret the Bible for them.

I haven't actually played the second yet myself but I would say the first is such a hoot to play, and the story so elegantly delivered, that I can't imagine playing it first being a bad decision.
