Almost three weeks since pub, my tree is flowering, and I’m still holding out hope for this book. 🌸

See, this is the commitment I fundamentally lack when it comes to research.

I hope your friend at least had fun on the high seas.

For the most part, this occurs against our will.

Publishers should be invested in promoting the books they publish.

its very easy to fall into "one weird trick" ideas in publishing, like personalizing queries and such. you don't have to!

unfortunately there are only two weird tricks (write a good book, get lucky) and they're both incredibly hard.

Scientists in China have developed a tough new bamboo-based plastic that biodegrades in 50 days. The new material matches the strength of engineering plastics used in cars and appliances while retaining 90% of its durability after recycling. buff.ly/zXWVoIS

Biodegradable plastic made from bamboo is strong and easy to recycle
Bamboo is a highly renewable resource, and its cellulose fibres can be turned into a hard, mouldable plastic for use in cars and appliances

"The classic decision is always the same, whether to retreat or go on. There comes a time when it is easier to continue upward, when the summit, in fact, is the only way out. At such a moment one must still have strength." —James Salter, SOLO FACES (and a metaphor for novel writing?)

The prose is just delicious. So accomplished. I was really glad it was chunky so I could spend more time with it, so I completely get your strategy of starting over. 😂

184. Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes. Dark fantasy? EVERYTHING I WANTED, BEST OF 2025, URGH IT'S SO FUCKING GOOD! Baroque and WEIRD and prose you'd lick off knives. Gender weirdness, bugs, hypnotically beautiful mutation body-horror! Kin to Kerstin Hall's Asunder. Dgaf about genre. Love love LOVE!
Book cover for The Works of Vermin by Hiron Ennes. An opalescent centipede makes a circle around the title. Vague florals in toxic greens and oranges frame a deep purple background.

I don’t know if studying the humanities makes you a more empathetic or kind person, but it at least pushes you to actually engage with culture/society/history beyond the service of your individual wanting. (i.e. “How will studying this degree earn me money and success?”)

I don’t regret studying English for one minute. Aside from Mandarin, it was by far the most intellectually taxing component of my education.

I don’t really know where to start with this, except to say that higher education should not be solely intended to produce better employees, but more competent thinkers and problem solvers.

Calling English a 'rip-off degree' is one of the most blatant exhibitions of personal barbarism I've ever seen. You've demonstrated nothing but the poverty of your own mind.
