At my niece's 1st birthday party, my husband and I watched in fascination as she largely rejected her chocolate cake in favor of salami liberally smeared with chocolate cake frosting. Toddlers have a way with food.

I mean this very literally and not in a snarky sense: a bunch of people currently in power have fairly obvious learning disabilities that were apparently never addressed, and they believe that hiding them and achieving certain measures of success is how they prove fitness.

As a fashion historian, I will die on this hill: the point of having blue hair and nose rings (or spiky nails or stripper heels or tattoos or an all-black wardrobe) is not to look pretty or cool. Honestly, it’s exhausting that people think Gazans should only ask for help to survive to eat, to stay alive but not to dream, to study, or to rebuild their lives. Wanting education, safety, and a future isn’t greed. It’s being human.

This is from memory, but I think it’s pretty close—he writes of Elizabeth Gaskell something like “she was too pretty to need to write but she did it anyway!” He also calls her Mrs Gaskell which I know was common, but which a scholar at a conference I went to said she hated.

I have a collection of ghost stories by Victorian women that was collected in the sixties by a male scholar and it is hilarious this way. He clearly sees himself as very progressive for collecting the works of women writers but then he describes them in extremely sexist ways.

If it’s the same one (and I assume it is unless Diana was seducing tons of biographers) there’s a part where Jessica’s baby dies after her family refuses to help her and the biographer is like “It’s too bad the baby died but Jessica WAS very rude and shouldn’t have expected help.”
