If I remember correctly from when I was five goddamn years old, Carpenter’s version left off the whole first part of the short story and jumps straight into the Thing entering the camp in the guise of a dog (?)…I can understand why you’d include one element or the other, but not both.

Anyway that was pretty great, was surprised it didn’t bring in the shapeshifting at all, but I guess it would’ve taken too long to go into that and still show the finding of the ship, the melting of the ice, etc.—all the great, exciting stuff that you’d want in a movie.

My parents let me watch The Thing with them when I was 5, which explains a lot about me (like the inability to deal with gore and being afraid of the dark into my 20s)

The original story, “Who Goes There?” by John Campbell, is worth a read. A little slow but very, very good. I found it on the Internet Archive.
