I would have liked to have filmed the inking of this tiny wren and the shrub's very fine branches with this brush, but I needed to get especially close to the piece for this and it would have been too awkward.

1/2
Detail from a silhouette drawing in black ink of a tiny bird perched on a small, leafless shrub. The head of a hen just makes it into the crop, opposite the bird. The drawing is very fine and intricate. The detail shown is roughly comparable in size to two postage stamps, and is photographed with a penny and the traditional Chinese brush the piece was drawn with.

EXTREMELY COOL BAT STUFF: A study out in Science today found that the greater noctule bat, Europe's largest, hunts and catches *migrating birds* while in flight. In at least one case, a bat climbed to more than 1200 feet, then chased a robin downward FAST until it caught it near the ground.
Greater noctule bats prey on and consume passerines in flight
Despite billions of passerines seasonally migrating during the night at high altitudes, only three bat species have been found to consistently tap into this rich prey resource. However, it remains unk...

easy to blame news media for everything wrong in america today, but the fact is nearly all american adults have access to news coverage that is free and generally accurate, and they choose not to use it. that’s a much deeper problem that will be much harder to fix than bad headlines

Before Nancy, before Sluggo, before Bushmiller, there was Fritzi. Larry Whittington’s “Fritzi Ritz” first appeared on October 9, 1922. Here are the first four strips:

If you want a more extensive look at Fritzi’s debut (and who doesn’t?), here’s a piece from Hogan’s Alley #7 that gives background on the pre-Bushmiller, pre-Nancy Fritzi (and shows dailies from the debut): www.hoganmag.com/blog/fritzi-...
