easy to blame news media for everything wrong in america today, but the fact is nearly all american adults have access to news coverage that is free and generally accurate, and they choose not to use it. that’s a much deeper problem that will be much harder to fix than bad headlines

Thinking about how the rich people in the shows view poor people as basically invisible and subhuman, Columbo’s skill and dogged omnipresence IS a supernatural event for them. He’s a Lovecraftian horror, a Thing that cannot exist, a being whose geometry, figuratively speaking, is all wrong.

I have a deep and abiding respect for Mrs. Columbo, as does Columbo himself, who seems to be quite the Wife Guy.

That said, in my vision of Columbo, this is not incompatible with his also having a private life. Mrs. Columbo is real, unless he was miming talking on the phone to her all the time or had an actor calling and leaving messages for him at crime scenes.
