Well, a lot of people are trying to puzzle out his attitude towards revolutionary leftism, and the depiction of the French 75 gives them a lot to chew on. Some find it reactionary because the movement is kneecapped by human foibles, an opinion that I think denies the human element in political art.

I think we’re generally used to revolutionaries on film being either heroes or villains. This is a rare film that paints a clear picture of hardcore leftist organizations: good intentions sit side by side with human frailty and horniness. And sometimes they achieve incredible things.

I think it’s extremely kind! It shows immense grace to everyone who turns rat, acknowledging that under that pressure most people would crack. And Sensei Sergio (the coolest motherfucker in the movie) has absolute respect for the French 75, which is composed of fallible but not bad people.
