This is definitely hardcore horror with lots of gore, but it continues the second film’s preoccupations with humanism, pacifism and spirituality.

(I actually loved how odd and emotional 28 YEARS LATER was. I’d have been disappointed if they’d just done another spooky fast zombie story.)

Anyway when the GOP runs a more presentable white supremacist running on tax cuts, many of these voters will return.

Yes yes yes! To the point where honestly they could end right here and things would feel, in a strange way, complete.

I love that Garland seems to be using the YEARS movies as a way of tenderly mourning things we’ve lost as the world has slid further into sectarian cruelty. And he also, movingly, seems to be telling us that these things don’t have to be lost.

It’ll be a crime if we don’t get the trilogy capper promised by the coda. But even if the financials scupper that idea, this provides its own strange form of closure. I left feeling weirdly soothed.

Gonna be watching it this week. I was surprised by what they pulled off with this one! A lot of low budget oners have loose staging, aren’t super precise in directing the eye. Not so here. Quite an achievement by the cast and crew.

Two thoughts:

1. I tend to favor fights over tacticool shootouts, and this leans heavily on the latter. But it’s A+ tacticool and the fights are hellacious.

2. Despite throwing surprising humanist wrinkles into its War On Terror stuff, it’s still basically politically horrific, so be warned.
