This goes for anyone who is using genAI when what is needed is critically engaging with a topic. These tools don't think, so the thinking is not being "outsourced".

It's just not being done.

What's being done is an algorithm is generating plausible-seeming output in response to input.

I think part of the problem with framing what students use genAI stuff for as "thinking" is that's not what they're doing.

They're using genAI to avoid engaging with and processing whatever the topic is.

They're outsourcing the proof of having engaged with the content.
