If you're seeing encouragement/demands to do alt text and you're overwhelmed or confused about how to do it and you're worried you're going to do it wrong...

this thread is for you.

First: prompt questions to get you started.
Alt text prompt Qs:

What would someone who can't see the image need to know about it in order to take part in the conversation? What is it about this image that made you choose it? What are the important details someone who could see the image would take away from it?

(Not for images of text.)
How the fuck is Supernatural leaving Netflix soon? I never finished watching the whole thing but knowing it was always there if I needed it was very comforting.

Whenever people say something about how [basic human decency] as part of a platform loses elections, I just think they really do not understand how much what people will vote for is—in the end—driven by who is paying for the narrative they're hearing.

“Capitalism forces you to wake up at 7am against your body’s natural rhythms” no that’s Taylorism and if you don’t like living in a society that coordinates effort to ensure a better outcome for all then I don’t think you’ll love the alternatives

Me: okay down to a week to get my apartment ready for the annual housing authority inspection for my HCV. Gotta really start doing the things.

Also me: slept in very late, has not yet left the bed, genuinely worn out from all the stuff I did last week.

Understandable.

My early thought about this case was that the missing trans woman is a sex worker and the friend who reported her missing is her pimp just because it seemed quite similar with stuff from the Gilgo Beach (LISK) murders.

Could very well be wrong but...

Everything I've ever heard about Alberta does not make me think well of it.

I assume Clearsky might let me see that but it would also give me too much temptation to access other knowledge that might harm me so I just reject that much power.

Let me see who wants to keep my words.

I don't think how this specific missing persons unit is shown interacting with the community is the norm—possibly not even within their own unit. But seeing people care about other people and actively try to help is the kind of content I go for.

Thinking about this concept structure for a lot of reasons, right now
“queer not as being about who you’re having sex with (that can be a dimension of it); but queer as being about the self that is at odds with everything around it and has to invent and create and find a place to speak and to thrive and to live.” -bell hooks

When it comes to the second missing person, when they find out she is a trans woman, it immediately (at least in the way the story is told) increases their level of concern and the lead investigator even explains that trans women are at much higher risk of violence.

Also if James Carville doesn't recognize that social issues ARE also economic issues he has spent way too much time surrounded by extremely privileged white folks.

Do people outside of the group whose conversations these are to have really hate not knowing the exactly correct language to use and not knowing if what one racialized person tells them is correct is going to change and not be correct or actually bother a different racialized person?

Obviously.
Are these terms racialized people try to figure out to use for ourselves complicated? Yes, for fuck's sake, we're not goddamn monoliths.

These are negotiations we have in community with other racialized people to figure out how to use language to accurately represent our experiences.
James Carville doesn't get to talk about the terms racialized people try to figure out to use for ourselves and talk about our experiences. Fucking period.

White people stfu and foh on that topic forever.

There is a whole thing going on in the apartment complex where the first missing person lives and the documentary takes time to show that it was a good place to live before that and that these poor and often mentally ill people had a good community that was being harmed by outside forces.
I like seeing the people who are supposed to help actually care about the folks they're trying to find.

In season two they're looking for a Black schizophrenic drug addict who lives in a low-income apartment complex and then a Black trans woman.

There are some moments that are clearly reenacted to fit a fairly familiar dramatic procedural format—otherwise the main investigator would be the most amazingly genre-savvy cop ever.

But even with that, it's still an unexpected level of attention to and lack of judgment toward vulnerable people.
