Yup. But I think it's also proof (as if we needed more) that folks can be swayed by what the people around them normalize. Which I find hopeful in that it means that if we commit to normalizing prosocial values, we can sway people that direction.

I mean based on how folks who stuck it out for longer acted when they first got here, it seemed to be the frog-in-boiling-water thing. (Even though my understanding is frogs don't actually do that, it's still a concept that makes sense.)

I think it's partly because people got used to the belief that empathy is magic and suddenly if they don't think they're feeling the right things, the guardrails are off. Because they make decisions based on vibes and not values.

The entire concept of "empathy burnout" is why I think the way people talk about empathy is bullshit.

It's a model where people are allowed to opt out of doing the right thing because they don't feel the right things.

It's a model where everything is about vibes, not values.

Taylor Swift was on a podcast talking about how people who are gluten free can eat sourdough. Anyways, as a person with Celiac, I can confidently say "no the fuck we can't." Sourdough bread is not gluten free. Do not feed sourdough bread to gluten intolerant people or people who have Celiac.
