I had to look this up and Merriam Webster says the term is about remaining straight at a horizontal level and not lethality so I guess technically, since he seemed close enough that there was no arc to the sandwich's path of flight, it was point blank range

It's not in this article but the government asserts that the sandwich was thrown at "point blank range", which implies subway sandwiches have defined effective weapon ranges of varying lethality, and I would like to see the government's chart of these ranges.
