I went looking for books on Venezuela today because that's always my first instinct and practically everything is from an academic press, or out of stock AND from a publisher whose politics I don't trust

What if none of these things is a distraction from the other things and instead they're all just horrible things

Wouldn't it be cool if the Senate majority leader (one of my senators!) accepted voicemails after office hours and on weekends?
Call your Congressperson now. It will be logged as “Holy cow we got X calls on the week end”. If they’re Dems they need these calls to pressure worse Dems & better Republicans. Don’t give up the ship yall.
Candid answer - as someone who handled constituent affairs calls for years - while they’re not checking the phone right now, the urgency of the moment is important.

Show them you care enough to make the weekend call, and be counted that way. Staffers will clock and report this upstream.

I know it's just tourist helicopters overhead but we've just illegally invaded a foreign country and kidnapped their president and I don't appreciate the additional anxiety triggers

I suddenly want to redo my bathroom in this style
New York City has a new mayor
January 2, 2026 at 11:00 AM
I love this for all of us
I was wondering what Mamdani's first executive order would be, and I'm not disappointed by this.

He has wiped off the books EVERY Eric Adams executive order issued on or after September 26, 2024, the day Adams was indicted on federal bribery charges.

Not to be ridiculous and superficial on main but is there a more attractive mayoral family in the country?

When is the NY Post going to rant about Rama's coat because I want to know where that's from, too.
January 1, 2026 at 8:00 PM
And Mamdani sits there grinning. You love to see it
crowd screaming "tax the rich" at a mayoral inauguration in the heart of the global center of capitalism, you love to see it

MHC alumnae rising up en masse as Lucy Dacus performs Bread & Roses at Mamdani's inauguration #forevershallbe (I married in, I'm #evertrue)

The Mamdani administration has me feeling hopeful. This inauguration ceremony is so wholesome and inclusive and joyful.

FUCK YEAH
BREAKING

Zohran Mamdani has been sworn-in as the 112th Mayor of New York City.
January 1, 2026 at 5:35 AM
That was a stupid year.
Ready to try again.
January 1, 2026 at 5:01 AM
THAT is trivia I did not know on spite of this overlap of interests (NYC history, the MTA, and TMNT) (though obviously secret of the ooze is inferior to the original in every way) (it doesn't even have Elias Koteas)
Mamdani will be sworn in in the station that inspired the Turtles lair in TMNT 2: The Secret Of The Ooze

Sahara is on this list for me
watching MURDER AT 1600 and it has officially entered my own personal pantheon of terrible movies that i unironically enjoy a great deal
January 1, 2026 at 2:11 AM
The only reason to stay up until midnight this year is to watch the calendar turn on the Adams Administration
And to think NYC goes full socialist in just over 4 hours.

Is the best thing to come out of the gay hockey show the author finally getting the medical care she needs?
I hate that this is a feel good story & not an indictment of the fact that you need to be very rich or know the right people to get specialized care but I live in the real world so 🤷‍♀️

Why are there three private helicopters hovering over midtown right now (SW corner of Central Park + mid W 50s) and a third that buzzed my neighborhood and now is slowly going down the east river, and all left Linden about a half hour ago

People are sharing what they are proud of from 2025. I bought myself basketry materials for the first time in 25ish years and made some things and taught a few other people to make some things

James Cameron has said he’ll write Avatar novels himself, although doesn’t think there’s a business case for books anymore. https://bit.ly/4pScKIN
