Community colleges, which educate about 40 percent of the nation’s college students, are contending with millions of dollars in lost funding for everything from campus-based child care to student advisement and academic support.
Trump praised community colleges. Then came the cuts.

Rep. Vern Buchanan, representing a strongly right-leaning district in Manatee & Hillsborough Counties, is having a hard time convincing his voters that the government shutdown is bad, even when he lies about what healthcare subsidies Democrats are standing up for.

Sarasota County Schools has received notices targeting three of its public school buildings and Manatee County has received notices targeting two buildings. Here's a great FB post with the whole rundown, including links to the legislation causing this chaos.

A private charter company in Miami called Mater Academy is sending notices of intent to occupy school buildings to districts across Florida. Apparently the Schools of Hope law recognizes claims on buildings by priority of first received,so it's being described as a real-estate grab. /3

The Schools of Hope legislation allows private, for-profit charter operators, even those with uncertified teachers, to squat on unused space in existing public schools, even if they are high-performing. They don't have to pay anything for the building costs. And the districts can't refuse. /2

Japan, ostensibly one of the least religious countries in the world, had its political order upended by the lay Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai. That is THE story about Friday's epochal shift in Japanese politics (thread follows):

I’m nearing the limits of my endurance, but I took a first crack at thinking about the winners and losers from Takaichi’s surprising upset Saturday. Much more to come.

It's nice to read a principled Republican patriot remind us about our values and responsibilities as Americans and the importance of placing country before politics...and for those reasons, Joe McClash will be vilified by his fellow Republicans for his words today.

The Trump admin’s offer to give preferential treatment to institutions that toe the party line reeks of bribery in exchange for allegiance to a partisan ideological agenda.

This is corruption.

Adherence to ‘loyalty oaths’ would usher in a new era of thought policing in American higher education.

It's easy to see this speech as just weirdly performative, but there's a lot more—and a lot worse—going on here.

The meeting & speeches are part of a larger project aimed at promoting the military leadership’s partisan alignment with the administration.

How? 1/
