Mar 11: MEMIE - Rae Thoma Rae Fetsa (2025)

From the ever reliable @lokpolokpo1.bsky.social comes this short delightful record, six tracks of lekompo, SA house with a bubblegum twist in the beats and bleeps, like the producers are turning the dials with one hand and playing pinball with the other
The cover of Memie’s Rae Thoma Rae Fetsa - Memie, a Black woman in shades, a brown cropped jersey and tartan miniskirt, leaning with one hand on a wooden chair

“Solid” is a very powerful song and “Better Be Good To Me” has always been one of my Tina faves. one will get my vote, altho I fear they’re both underdogs here.

(“Better Be Good To Me” starts playing - who am I kidding? come on, come on. I have no use for what you loosely call the truth, baby)

here for the He’s A Cobra/Centipede mashup

never really gotten the “Through The Fire” hype, “Somebody’s Watching Me” is more fun, altho it overstays its welcome. I’m keeping my ballot Talking Heads-free here, so Whodini get their chance to shine.

yeah very sad.

weird/funny tho that his name sort of predicts the whole rave thing

I haven’t got there yet!

makes me wonder: should I take on Cuntypede as my new drag name or would it already be taken?

this comment seems to pop up with every group and each time I think: hmmm you may have a point
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
I nominated followup “Get Loose” from/for the same year, mainly to shore up the “Release Yourself” nom but also because I think it’s ~even better~ youtu.be/ICD0juIR6bk?...

shame on you Tom for putting “Release Yourself” and “Centipede” in the same group. “Centipede” is a trip, but I gotta go with the Aleem twins and Leroy Burgess for being more of that elevated Paradise Garage-core.

(love “Police Officer” too, Ilkari Maru sound zoomed in from a different era)

tough group, thought I was going to vote for the everlasting Isleys and one of the most-sampled tracks ever, but I let the comments sway me: yes of course I’m going for seconds with the Gap Band. their was such a defining sound in the early 80s, that Thick Layer of Steaming Sound

this is between Deniece W and Phyllis* N and I love “Move Closer” the best.
(never been able to connect to “Missing You” and “Cool It Now” has cool production but I can’t with the kiddy voices)

*her name also a helpful reminder to play me some Phyllis ~Hyman~

I’ve decided to vote for the mid-80s r&b finesse of Jeffrey Osborne. I’m not taking any questions.

5 of my 8 picks going thru here, a total of 11/26 so far - and finally some bonuses that worked!
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
deservedly close, and yet this result is more or less exactly right
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
can I have a moment for the ass-tuteness of the (almost) opening lyric of “You came up from behind me and I knew / That our eyes were gonna meet”? I wonder if she took him home?
which brings me to Lisa & Full Force’s fantastic electro voyage, which has an even better energy than Evelyn’s banger.
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
yeah, this being a very soft group was why I made the remark
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
highly doubt it, but it’s a 7/10

note: if the Thelma H track sounds vaguely familiar to some of you, it’s possibly because 808 State sampled it on “Ancodia” from their 1989 90 album (lads, you shouldn’t have): youtu.be/kno1gIUloY8?...

“Change Of Heart” is another baffling B-side, that song was huge, deservedly! not wild about this new-to-me Boney M track. “You used to Used to hold Used to hold me Used to hold me so Tiiiight” is a lesser known but über classic Jam & Lewis track, and it gets my vote. see, I’m treating Mother right!

vote for António Sanches’s stunning “Amizade Belo Pereira” in the #BMHM8285 poll!
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
“Amizade Belo Pereira” is stunning: the interplay between voice and accordion anchored by whatever utter beauty of sound is going on in the background.
the others are top-notch too, might give my bonus to Shirley Lites (my stats tell me I listened to it several times in the early 2010s - I forgot)
lokpolokpo1.bsky.social
better savour the feeling, Irene! it may be a fleeting one…
