Mar 11: MEMIE - Rae Thoma Rae Fetsa (2025)

From the ever reliable @lokpolokpo1.bsky.social comes this short delightful record, six tracks of lekompo, SA house with a bubblegum twist in the beats and bleeps, like the producers are turning the dials with one hand and playing pinball with the other
The cover of Memie’s Rae Thoma Rae Fetsa - Memie, a Black woman in shades, a brown cropped jersey and tartan miniskirt, leaning with one hand on a wooden chair

(broederliefde means ‘brotherly love’, appropriately enough)
they specialize in Dutch-language hiphop party anthems, but do sometimes nod to the Cabo Verdean part of their background, as on the fantastic “Moral” from 2015, with fellow Rotterdam-born singer William Araujo: youtu.be/HdvtSUy_gFY?...

yes, it’s wonderful. was all over the news here too, because six of the squad are Rotterdam natives, that city being home to one of the world’s largest Cabo Verdean diaspora communities. in fact, one of the six is the brother of one of the members of a very popular Dutch group, Broederliefde.

wait, “C’est La Vie” was not a Robbie Nevil original? and The Bar-Kays had queer-positive lyrics? anyway, lots of respect for young Mr Paul, but I’m giving this to Mbilia Bel and her Congolese charms.

in 1996, “Set It Off” was adapted by (“Waterfalls” producers) Organized Noize (including the uncredited singer-songwriter Andrea Martin) to serve as the title theme to the movie of the same name - Queen Latifah, who plays in the movie, has a rap feature: youtu.be/pmQcf0SJfOQ?...

this is so “Set It Off” it hurts. a mysterious sounding beat box symphony slash call to action (or even arms), so good it’s truly crazy. the Egyptian Lover could never. also, apologies Joce, I am indeed somebody else’s guy today.

I think I may have never heard “Tenderness” before? gave it GB status (how my fav band ca 1980 disappeared into an American black hole a mere 3 years later). the real battle is happening in the Female Attitude section and is as yet unsettled: Cherrelle’s sorry no vs Klymaxx’s taking care of business

“Smooth Operator” miraculously (well, thanks to Sade Adu) continues to stand the test of having heard it countless times (it’s also safe), “Jungle Love” still bangs, revisiting “What Do I Do” was surprisingly fun, but the winner is the elastic synth bass in “Jam On It”.

hey, while (the) Village People turned out to be very stoppable, there’s no stopping the actual music!

Mike Atkinson of @whichdecadetops.bsky.social is involved in this btw

keeping the 1982 vibe going with this edition of the Record Mirror Disco Charts podcast featuring a very engaging guest, none other than Arthur Baker. very fun and very interesting, lots of familiar names from the poll pass by: open.spotify.com/episode/3WmS...

funnily enough when I was just listening to it again that was my favourite bit - there’s several unexpected (stop) gaps in that chorus and it really works

it’s a woman’s gall

(one of her best songs too)

ever fantasise about an Igbo 🇳🇬 version of “All Night Long (All Night)”? it exists! came across it on a recent Soundway comp of Nigerian sounds from ‘78-‘93 that also features Ayo Manuel from group B15: youtu.be/9v3L9_SKjik?...

co-blame (at least) to my reading facilities: I understood “single-artist” as “solo-artist”

gents, this is why I wrote “overpolled as it *feels*” - and yes, it has a lot to do with the fact that Pointers songs invariably perform exceptionally well in these PPPolls. “Automatic” is very likely a strong contender to win this thing.

(I also forgot to mention the crucial bass element in the António Sanches track!)

“Amizade Belo Pereira” is stunning: the interplay between voice and accordion anchored by whatever utter beauty of sound is going on in the background.
the others are top-notch too, might give my bonus to Shirley Lites (my stats tell me I listened to it several times in the early 2010s - I forgot)
