The big change, I think, came in 2016. Until then, it delivered much balanced, urbane commentary even on Brexit. It has since lost the plot.

If this is a genuine change of tack, it’s welcome. But I wonder (a) how much is just an attempt at triangulation to keep disillusioned progressives on board and (b) how it will play out in practice given Labour’s own needlessly dogmatic manifesto pledge not to try to rejoin the single market.

A Reform government might repeal the HRA, pull out of the ECHR and potentially other international instruments. But would it legislate to disapply common law rights and protections (eg against torture) which opponents of the ECHR are fond of saying are of an equivalent standard?

Because, having flirted with Farage, the Tories see he’s now beating them and are desperate to outflank him again? Because even Labour has to some extent dignified this awful narrative? #Kuenssberg doesn’t challenge Badenoch on the implications leaving the #ECHR will have for the UK’s trade deal with the EU or the Good Friday Agreement. Basically gives her free rein to talk about immigration to the exclusion of all other policy areas. Farage really has managed to dictate the tone.

The death wish predates Badenoch (however clueless she is). It was Johnson who began in earnest the Tory shift to the hard right and marginalized sensible moderates. Now, bereft of its centre-right USP, the party is condemned to imitating Farage miserably.
