Very funny that the government thinks highly qualified people who speak English even better than the locals want to live here to be chased down the street by drunks waving flags 🤣

In 2010, an interviewer told Neil Kinnock that the Labour Party "never used to understand aspiration".

Kinnock gave an absolutely brilliant answer that should be learned by heart by every Labour MP. (0.42 to 1.22)

I'm sure that's simply symbolic of some other societal problem!?

I'm as guilty as the next person, which is why I think that intervention by the government and local government is vital if we are to be encouraged to change our behaviour.

Meanwhile not forgetting the immense harm done by Thatcher through open privatisation and deregulation. I'm not surprised if Millennials have no feel for this.

It is may be 3x average pay but 62% tax rate on earnings over £100,000 and cliff edge removal of childcare subsidies limit aspirations of upper middle classes bit.ly/49arr4e misleading to call it ‘working hard’ not ‘being lucky and clever’. Many work very hard on £12.21/hour 48 hours a week or more
This tax trap is killing youthful aspiration
Little wonder the under-40s laud Margaret Thatcher: she valued hard work, unlike the rules that penalise them today

I get odd looks for saying that I feel sorry for younger people because they never had long periods of boredom to fill… but I wandered museums and galleries to fill empty time, and ended up filling my mind and senses and imagination… there’s a lot to be said for having time to kill…

Harry Wingfield, of the Ladybird books and others, is among the most underestimated illustrators of C20.

One of the best exhibitions I have been (I have been to 100s) was a retrospective of his original work in Walsall.

Follow @lbflyawayhome.bsky.social for regular servings of Ladybird goodness.

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

Brilliant! Everyone who drives a car should be required to walk for a month into their city via the arterial routes. Or walk to school with their children along the busy roads in the morning. Are you happy your children are breathing in all this invisible stench? Do you get the damage it is causing?

It would also help if the Home Secretary did. It's painfully obvious that she has no idea what A Level English even covers (and does not cover), or of the linguistic issue she's talking about.

English is a language easy for a non-native to learn to get by in, but very difficult to master.

Literature O level Grade 9 I believe (1 in today's currency). I didn't get on with Eng Lit. It was always about, "read this book or read this poem, and now tell me what it really means"

When I see announcements like this, I have to ask - how many of the people out there who are so vehemently anti-migrant would actually pass English at an A-Level standard?
Migrants will need A-level standard English to work in UK

It would be a good starting point, in the war against disinformation, if reputed, or at least once-reputed, news outlets got their basic facts right.

Just a point to add to this.

In a Times article mentioning the same issue, it notes about dependents of migrants that:

“At present they do not have to speak any English at all.”

Which isn’t the case - at all.
The tougher language requirement will not apply to family members who come with migrant workers, known as dependants.
Separate changes will require them to learn a standard of English equivalent to GCSE.
At present they do not have to speak any English at all. The government has not said when the changes for dependants will be introduced.

AZ AG Mayes: If I have to, I’ll take Speaker Johnson to court. There's no legitimate reason for him to refuse to swear her in right now. And it's not fair for Mike Johnson to be holding the state of Arizona hostage because he doesn't want to release the Epstein files.
