My used bookstore win for the year was this anthology of the iterations that became 451, including published short stories and discarded side quests, which makes it a wonderful portrait of the refining and editing process. There’s something healthy about being reminded that greatness takes time.

Anyone else a fan of Shirley Jackson, especially her short stories?

Other than Jane Austen, there is no other writer I so completely admire. And like Austen, it is what she does not say that makes her writing so great.

If you only know The Lottery you are in for a treat.

Aston Villa’s Goal of the Month contest for August, cancelled because we scored no goals, has more footballing credibility than the FIFA peace prize for Trump.

So (see @klonick.bsky.social last night) today may be the day that the EU Commission fines X for breach of the Digital Services Act (DSA). Busy day for me, and I expect many questions if it happens, so here's an explanation thread in advance.

First of all, a reminder of the provisional decision
EU Commission preliminary findings that Twitter/X has breached the Digital Services Act (nb remedy is a fine, not a ban)

The fact that a second strike like that in an armed conflict is definitely a war crime should not completely negate the fact that *there is no war* and ALL the strikes are cold-blooded murder. The whole chain of command are murderers.

"Simply removing juries without strengthening other parts of the criminal justice system would therefore be a false economy leading to a miscarriage of justice." From an excellent @prospectmagazine.co.uk piece by @davidallengreen.bsky.social:

An excellent piece by Yasmin Khan in @theguardian.com – and I’m very relieved the preposterous case against her has been dropped. www.theguardian.com/food/comment...
I called my recipe book Sabzi – vegetables. But the name was trademarked. And my legal ordeal began
The granting of patents and trademarks to foods and words from the global south is part of a long colonial grab. It’s time to realise we share what we cook, and what we call it

Couching it in terms where the "overdiagnosis" implicitly places the blame on the patient for speaking out about their suffering is nasty. If this gov is concerned about mental health as a troubling variable economic factor, they should invest in treating it. Not creating further barriers.

Ordering an inquiry into crisis levels in the diagnosis of neurodivergence, an issue that has uncovered how massively underdiagnosed, under-supported, and ignored (predominantly) the suffering of neurodiverse women has been since... Well, forever, is fine. It's fine. But...

Oh, look. A load of coverage about a new government inquiry into "overdiagnosis" that completely blurs autism & mental illness, and ends up leaning into all those tropes about people making it all up.

Current US Policy:

If you’re suspected of trafficking a small amount of drugs with no evidence, we will murder you, but if you’re convicted of trafficking an enormous amount of drugs with copious evidence, we will pardon you. Because we are currently a very stupid country.

If we're not at war, Pete Hegseth is a murderer. If we are at war, Pete Hegseth is still a murderer. He's a murderer. And you don't need to go to The Hague to hold him accountable because there are perfectly good, American laws AGAINST MURDER.

Pete Hegseth Should Be Charged With Murder
No matter how you look at the strikes on alleged “drug boats”—as acts of war or attacks on civilians—Hegseth has committed a crime and should be prosecuted.

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

Trump is so debasing to republicans that their only way to deal with him is by playing stupid. this shit is so embarrassing, honestly
Q: You outlined the dangers posed by drugs. So what explanation do you have for Trump pardoning the former president of Honduras?

SEN. ROGER MARSHALL: I don't know the details. Happy to look into it. I can't speak to it

Q: Alright. Um. Ok. Like, no thought on it?

MARSHALL: I haven't researched it

In just a few days, Pete Hegseth has gone from “Fake News” to Admiral Bradley gave the order (after saying the day after the event that he watched it all live), to saying he left the room after the first strike because he was busy. This is why you don’t put the Fox News weekend host in charge.

Good news!

Earlier this year I shared reports that the land around the Cerne Abbas Giant was up for sale

I’m delighted that, after lots of conversations, the land has now been bought by the National Trust (who already own the Giant): www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2025...

This framing of unlawful things as a mere matter of legal opinion sadly not limited to US press.
