#SCIMaP estimates current & future economic losses in local communities across the US (counties & Congressional Districts). We explain our approach in a new preprint: www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1...

(w @joshuasweitz.bsky.social @asinclair.bsky.social @cl10.bsky.social)
Faceted plot with panels for Atlanta, Pittsbrugh, and Houston. Focal counties (Dekalb, Alleghany, and Houston) are outlined. Surrounding counties are shaded by future estimated annual economic loss due to the proposed cap on indirect costs based on commuter flows that connect to a focal county (indicated by light pink outline).

Lost Science is a new NYT series of accounts from scientists who have lost their jobs or funding. You can send your story to the Times here www.nytimes.com/2025/10/08/c...

The budget he defended to Congress would have cut 5000 training grants.

I went to a talk by NIH Director Bhattacharya last month where he detailed evidence that opportunities for ECRs have declined over the past few decades. Then he moved on to the next slide without offering any solutions (or explaining the actions he's taken so far). Here's a good place to start 👇

My op-ed just came out discussing how NIH leadership is failing early career researchers and, importantly, how we can push back and take our future into our own hands.
NIH Leadership Is Failing Early Career Researchers
Halted training programs, funding chaos, and hiring freezes jeopardize advancement options for early career researchers.

Important clarification, thanks!

I got my first dose of MMR almost exactly a year before Wakefield published his fraudulent, unethical study arguing it should be broken into 3 shots.

Almost 30 years later, my antibodies (and, unfortunately, this bad idea) are still going strong.
My measles antibodies measured at over 300 where the cutoff for immunity is 16.4

Today my @nytimes.com colleagues and I are launching a new series called Lost Science. We interview US scientists who can no longer discover something new about our world, thanks to this year‘s cuts. Here is my first interview with a scientist who studied bees and fires. Gift link: nyti.ms/3IWXbiE

New post at Science Matters, reviewing "The War on Science" a collection of 30+ essays that views the war as having a single source - the left - while neglecting to reckon with longstanding (and accelerating) corporate and political threats from the right.

An agenda had not yet been released, although it's possible they planned to revisit postponing the birth dose of HepB vaccine (after pushing off that vote last meeting).

Amidst the shutdown, it looks like the next meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices, which was scheduled for October 22-23, is being rescheduled.
Screenshot of 2025 schedule, which gives Sep 18 - 19 and then "2025 meeting, TBD"

The relentless Jessica McDonald has spent two weeks and hundreds of emails to fact check claims about the safety of #CovidVaccination in #pregnancy made at the #ACIP meeting.

She couldn't have been any quicker.

A lie can get around the world before the truth can get its shoes on.

A substantial body of evidence supports the safety of the COVID-19 vaccines during pregnancy, contrary to the suggestions of some members of the CDC’s vaccine advisory committee. HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently reconstituted the committee.

Florida's Surgeon General does, however, call measles outbreaks "common" and says he does not believe elimination is a worthwhile goal, "kids are gonna catch stuff...that's a part of health."

I did find this more recent interview where Ladapo doubles down, but seems to be treading carefully (emphasizing repeatedly that vaccines will still be available to those who want them, suggesting uptake will not decline if mandates are removed).

The sequel to We Want Them Infected is done!

COVID killed 1.2 million Americans while vaccines saved millions.

Yet, disinformation superspreaders were empowered, where they are taking a wrecking ball to science & medicine.

How did that happen?🧵

As someone who has paid attention to his public statements for 5+ years, I will be the 1st to say that Bhattacharya often says things that sound great.

But his statements are regularly contradicted by his actions. Especially now, it's critical to pay attention to what he does w the power he wields.
